Persistence pays off :)
« on: December 07, 2024, 06:14:34 AM »
Just posting to share my finally succeeding in getting the chance to buy the game.

Not sure what I finally did right, but managed to succeed in paying via my debit card.

Needed an assist from Ron to sort out the download link. So thanks Ron :)

Been wanting to add this title to my collection since it was released :)

UI is a challenge, but, I like the design all the same. I first encountered the game as AGW.

Glad you got it MrsWargamer.

Don't let the UI put you off, it took me five years but now I am fully sold and love this game a lot.

You can see my posts in the WWIIE forum.

Make sure your on 1.0.13.

Let me know if you need/want the 1.0.12 PDF manual.

I found a 141 page unofficial pdf file circa 2015.

If you have something more current, I'm interested :)

The one I have is from Jack who put this PDF together for version 1.0.12A

For a short history you can see my post on the release history notes here:

http://dogsofwarvu.com/forum/index.php/topic,9740.0.html

Jack culled the forums and talked with Ron for some clarifications and put together a nice PDF. You may have an older one.

Yes, its 140 pages, just make sure it says that the version is 1.0.12.

I am also a newbie (but I purchased this back in 2019 or so), but just this year I forced myself to learn this system and have been rewarded in leaps and bounds.

The system is very good once you start to understand how Ron's UI works and how the game works. I think you need to approach it like a board wargame, read up on the rules/manual a bit and what kicked in for me was the turn's phases and how to accept the UIs way of doing things and then on pages 99-13 you'll find the tutorial walk/read through that.

Once I got the Deploy phase figured out (air and naval if any) and then understood how movement (3 kinds) worked and then combat worked, things just started to gel and pop off in my mind.

I created  or started a couple of AARs.

If you'd like I could create a new AAR going through each phase/step thinking process if you'd like. It might help. Oh, I also got a Tips and Tricks PDF from somewhere, I'd have to send it to you or you can ask Francisco for it, he sent it to me. Lastly I think Asid posted a version of the Reference card which has the same info but just slightly different.

If you'd like me to create an AAR beginnings only (lol) then let me know which scenario interests you and I'll give it a shot.

Lastly, ask questions someone (eventually) will answer you here (the forum is very very slow in responding but I'll do my best to chime in and help out.

Don't get too frustrated and walk away like I did only to come back and kick yourself for not sticking with it, its really a great system. I don't care what others say. :D

Lastly, I just learned about how to use reserves and its so clever and awesome. I can talk it up in a mini AAR tutorial thing.

Just let me know.

Don

I appreciate what Ron wanted in the beginning. A board game on a computer. Not a computer wargame, but a board game using a computer as a tool.

I like that he created an AI for the WW2 Europe title, but I probably would never run a game of this magnitude and trust the AI to think sensibly.

I have Gary's War in the East/West. And printed out the rather impressive manuals. But, it just hasn't yet grabbed me... yet.
I also have Computer World in Flames in addition to the actual board game. Went the distance and bought the 3 hardcover manuals. I didn't get the maps, but DUH!! who has a 9x21 foot piece of wall :) It is also something I want to hunker down and master.

I consider any game of the magnitude of these titles to just be considered computer assisted board games.
My thoughts on players requiring an AI for an opponent for games like these is rude and unfriendly :)

The point of these on a computer, is a table big enough is just so inherently user unfriendly :)

Unfortunate that the UI is such a bear, but, no more imposing that setting up a 10 thousand counter wargame is.

My favourite obsession is my AH The Longest Day board game.
Thinking of disposable copy maps, and a corkboard surface mounted on my angled ceilings (I live in a nice attic apartment). I have 4 easy to exploit massive sections of ceiling surface I can just reach up and employ.

Real wargames (in my view) don't cry about lack of opponents. I've been playing wargames solo since the 70s.
Real wargames would never tolerate a ditsy AI while playing a wargame of this detail.

Hotseat is everything to me.
There are some great wargames on the market, but lack an option to cut the AI out of the process. Ok, so the dev wanted the sales from the whiners that demand an AI even if it will be moronic opponent. But I hate it when they don't even permit hotseat. It has to permit me to play me to get a 10.

You can send me an email at zovs66@gmail.com and I?ll send you the three files I got.

Personally I think the AI is good enough to learn the smaller scenarios.
