D.O.W. Wednesday Mission 16/06/21 @ GMT18:00

This scenario is a simulation and does not have any political message.

Iran-Iraq War 1985 by Captain_Colossus

11 March, 1985
Iraqi 4th Army Corps
Basra region

1) SITUATION:

The Persians effected Operation Badr against our homeland  yesterday following with a large attack through the battalion's sector. A major Basra connection to the Shatt al-Arab is threatened with capture along with the entrapment of the 2nd Brigade. Battalion survivors of yesterday's attack will screen the Brigade's withdrawal 10 km north-east.

          Enemy:

Delineation of the front line is marked on your map. The enemy's infantry picket was last contacted approximately one kilometer East (refer to the map for the dispostion of the front). The enemy is preparing a large brigade strength attack through the front led by T-55 tanks supported by Iranian mainline infantry units. Additionally, be aware that the enemy operates the lethal jeep mounted recoilless rifles. One of Sgt. Bitar's men in the third platoon encountered them in yesterday's fighting. He has said that he fears these weapons even more than the enemy's tanks. Moreover, while instances of them are rare, reports of Iranian Chieftain tanks and Cobra helicopters operating in our sector are confirmed. Finally, there is a relatively small chance the player may be bombed by Iranian F-4 Phantoms flying over the battlefield. Thus the random fortunes of battle: there is nothing that can be done other than to take measures to avoid observation and limit the time of exposure and detection.

   Own:

After midday prayers, the men have taken their afternoon tea ration. Tthe battalion's survivors are assembled for muster and consist of

           I  Husyn:

           1 X T-62 tank company .
           co/A     (Sr. Lt. al-Husyn)
            xo/ A   (Lt al-Saladyn)
            1/A     (Sr.Sgt Hadad)
            2/A     (Sgt Wasem)
            3/A     (Sgt Bitar)

Ammunition and fuel supplies are somewhat depleted for the T-62s, but not critically short.

            II Nassar:

co/B:  MTLB Forward Observer (Lt. Nassar) All artillery requests channel through this unit. Therefore, if this unit is destroyed no artillery will be available. Generally the MTLB FO should stay out of the battle unless the situation has turned from bad to worse- if the MTLB is destroyed, the Iraqi player suffers a performance penalty: the link to artillery is severed, additionally, all company B elements lose comms, all supporting infantry also lose comms (radio damage penalty).

4/B: BRDM-2 (Sgt. Rahal): Scout car.

A-1/4/B (BRDM-2 scout dismount - Cpl. Kassan assigned)

       2 x BTR-50 platoon
           1/B: (Cpl Alwad)
           2/B (Cpl Daher)

           1 X BTS-4 Armored recovery vehicle
    5/B (Cpl Safar)

1 X truck mounted ZU-23-2 dual AA: air defense.
           6/B (Cpl Nassar)

III  Company E Infantry survivors tenuously holding the line. Note the gaps in the line where the Iranians nearly broke through previously.

   Support:

            * Available artillery:
1 x M-41 82mm mortar. (Unit 1/6/A - Cpl Handal) Accurate fire from this weapon can decimate an infantry squad.
1 x MiG-23 airstrike: (it would not be doctrine for such a low level unit to have access to an air strike,  but given the situation consessions to gameplay are granted ).

2) MISSION:

Move and deploy your forces in order to fortify the line and meet the expected attack on VO. Stabilize the collapsing infantry line, and Delay the enemy advance for approximately one hour while the 2nd Brigade evacuates. It is not the objective to hunt down and kill every enemy unit on the entire map; rather, the area marked 'V0' must remain clear of any and all enemy tanks by the alloted time limit. Enemy infantry and supporting vehicles do not count toward the victory or loss total, however, they cannot be altogether ignored.
Avoid the two regions assigned as Iraqi Forces on your map. These boundaries are Penalty Zones and represent the greater war going on around you- they assign a random chance of being destroyed by friendly or enemy fire if they are entered. The men have collaqially called casualties by entering the penalty regions a condition called "Tanker's Butt".

As time approaches to within ten minutes of the conclusion of the match, warning messages updating the progress of the battle will appear. When the timer runs out, a final message will appear with the final tally. The possible results are:

1 Tactical Victory- the Iraqi player must retain at least 7 operational tanks in the objective area marked VO when the mission timer runs out and no Iranian tanks remain in VO. Explanation: the 2nd Brigade has escaped to continue operations, and your group manages to more or less survive the battle.

2 Draw- The Iraqi player succeeds in denying the Iranians area VO, but  with mixed results. Explanation: Some combination of either a pyrhic victory, or no enemy tanks remain in region VO at the end of the match, and/or there are not enough Iraqi tanks, or the Iraqi player has enough tanks to meet the 7 mininimum tank requirement, but at least 1 Iranian tank manages to remain active in area VO at the end of the time limit. This is a most common outcome, since it is fairly likely for the player preserve at least some resources or commit only partially to the battle. To the extent it is a small scale representation of the general intertial futility of the real conflict.

3 Strategic defeat- The Iraqi player has zero remaining tanks at the conclusion of the time limit in region V0, and the Iranians manage at least 1 tank in VO. Explanation The Iraqi player both loses all of his main assets, and fails in the greater objective to delay the enemy, which reverberates to the larger conflict. Additionally, severe punishment to the Iraqi commander for disloyalty comes attached.
