Manuals for importing SRTM1 data

Is there a full manual properly describing how I should import terrain data?
I want data for the netherlands atleast. Most of the Netherlands is under water, in the default terrain. (which isnt even true if you look at maps and it's alitude AMSL)

I have been able to load a flat map now but I'd still like to know how to load height data.
