Radio General
« on: April 14, 2020, 12:00:59 PM »

It's WWII. You're a general sitting in a tent. All you have is a map, and a radio. Can you win the battle? Radio General is a unique strategy game where you interact with your units over the radio using speech recognition. Test your mettle and relive famous battles as a WWII general.

Radio General - A Day in the Life of a General (Trailer)

About

Radio General is a real-time strategy game where you can't see your units. Instead you talk with them over the radio. You receive verbal reports, and then issue orders back. Unfortunately for you, war is confusing. Your units won't always know what's going on, and you must make tough decisions based on these incomplete (and often confused) reports. All of this is done from a detailed command tent, as it would have been during WWII.

Clear your throat, and show us your best commanding voice. By combining speech recognition with full voice-acting, you'll feel like you're a general on the horn with your troops. (Speech recognition only available in English and on Windows).

Behind the scenes, ammunition, morale, camouflage, sight and stamina are all being modelled. Elevation and terrain type will heavily influence battles. A smaller force will be more successful in launching ambushes in a forest than a larger force. Being on a road drastically improves movement speed, however affords little cover and camouflage. Being on a hill will drastically increase your spotting distance, whilst also increasing your range and damage. Study the map carefully, and identify how best to use your units.

Carefully choose which companies to deploy - each company has unique strengths and weakness. Learn the quirks and personalities of your companies: zealous officers may refuse to retreat. Veteran companies will gain specializations, with each unit type having unique abilities.

Everyone needs a break, and your companies must rest and replenish between missions. Exhausted units perform poorly, so watch your unit rotations.

Play from the under-represented perspective of the 1st Canadian Army. Take part in the disastrous Dieppe Raid, crack the Hitler and Gothic Lines in Italy, land upon the Normandy beaches and close the Falaise Gap.

Review 100's of historical photos, documents and video. Learn how soldiers lived throughout the war, and gain a better understanding of their experiences.

Recreate history's most famous battles of the war using an easy to use map editor. Share your creations using Steam workshop. Create challenging scenarios for others to try to beat!

Two heads are better than one - bring a comrade to fight at your side. Play the entire campaign cooperatively, or try custom missions from the Steam Workshop.

Patch v1.01 - time/speed options available
Sat, 11 April

You asked, and we answered - we've been monitoring and responding to discord and the community forums like a hawk, and a new patch addressing many concerns is now live! This is what we call aggressive patching.

You may need to restart steam to pick up the patch.

Patch v1.01

Major features:
- Added 'extra mission duration' toggle to level-select screen. This doubles the duration for each operation, allowing you to take it slow and maneuver to your heart's content.
- Added 'slow game speed' toggle to level-select screen. This halves the normal game speed, slowing down the game and allowing you to more easily react to the craziness of war.
Note: Both options above only available for singleplayer (for now).

Minor:
- Removed the 'look at me' red circle animation of message prompts after it happens twice
- Made units be able to retreat when under fire even if they can't see their attacker (a.k.a. someone shooting your tanks, and your tanks can't see them)
- Tweaked AI to add maximum distance they'll move to capture empty enemy-held objectives (no more cross-map marathons!)

Bug fixes:
- Resized main menu and options menu to better support super widescreen (3440x1440)
- Fixed scan-lines/grayscale remaining when quitting a mission while fast-forwarding via pause menu
- Fixed drum-roll sound not stopping when a max-veterancy unit is levelled-up
- Removed font warnings from player.log file
- Changed saved replay filenames to use given names instead of mission name
- MULTIPLAYER: Fixed client being unable to report enemy status using enemy figurines

What's next? A straight-line/move directly to command, localization improvements, a map editor guide, more bug fixes and maybe trading cards?

If you're having problems with speech recognition, please refer to this thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011610/discussions/0/2262438048225838980

Patch v1.02: more realism options, bug fixes and balancing
Sun, 12 April

Another 'aggressive' patch, this time we have a bit of everything, and give some love to the map editor. You may need to restart steam to get the patch.

Patch v1.02

Major features:
- Added 'Highlighting grid coordinates from radio messages on map' (showing event locations) option. This is toggled off for new 'high' realism campaigns.
- Added 'Units becoming understrength/exhausted after missions' option (shown when creating new campaign).
Note: for existing campaigns, you must toggle the above options yourself in the options menu.

Map editor:
- Upload to steam workshop button hidden not clickable until map is saved once
- Added confirmation panel when uploading to steam workshop
- Added more tooltips
- Fixed units sometimes ignoring elevation for path-finding
- Fixed unit controller field not setting properly
- Fixed road shapes not saving properly
- Made default controller for enemy units static AI
- Added highlighting to edit shape button
- Fixed airfields not having visible labels
- Made loading more error proof

Balance:
- Hitler Line: swapped an enemy infantry company with an infantry battalion (it felt wrong this mission is easier than the previous Gustav Line)
- Nerfed artillery blast radius veterancy perks by 50% (they were gosh darned too big!)

Minor:
- Units no longer report losing sight of enemies when panicking or retreating (they're too busy!)
- Royal Regina Rifles unit available for Juno Beach instead of Sicily, Royal 22é Regiment now available for Sicily
- Fixed potential break in Dieppe Raid tutorial
- Fixed rank designations in casualty list
- Fixed a few typos

What's next? A 'straight-line' move command, map editor steam guide and localization improvements

If you're having problems with speech recognition, please refer to this thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011610/discussions/0/2262438048225838980

Patch v1.03: map editor guide and more!
Mon, 13 April 2020

Happy easter everyone! Just because it's easter doesn't mean we stop patching. We focus primarily on the map editor, with a nice how-to guide written up.

We suggest creating new maps from scratch after this patch (we promise to stop breaking old maps soon!). If loading old maps, we recommend re-placing all roads, rivers and forests.
If your old map doesn't load, please send them to michael@foolish-mortals.net

You may need to restart steam to get the patch.

Patch v1.03

Map Editor:
- Uploaded steam map-editor guide:

Map-Editor Guide

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2058875860

- Added more tool-tips
- Fixed rare bug where certain fonts would disappear
- Removed large-town object for now - its shape was causing issues (will be reintroduced soon)
- Fixed custom-shaped terrain sometimes having wonky colliders
- Changed roads to be polygon shaped - the previous single-pathing was causing issues with colliders.

Major:
- Turned on vsync for all graphics quality settings to fix excessive frame-rate on certain machines

Minor:
- Added steam workshop button to custom missions level-select screen (opens a web browser to workshop page)
- Made figurine muzzle-flashes be disabled with 'show battle animations' option
- Fixed bug where dragging and unslotting a unit resulted in visual glitch and losing ability to slot that unit

Balance:
- Further reduced artillery blast radius veterancy perks
- Made tanks a bit more resistant to artillery barrages

What's next? Localization improvements, a 'straight-line' move command and of course more bug fixes.

Patch v1.04: You can help the war on speech recognition!
Tue, 14 April 2020

You can help us improve the speech recognition! We've added a toggle to the bottom-right of the main-menu that records your voice commands. We'd be grateful if you help us improve the speech recognition performance on your bizarre accents. Oh, we did other stuff in this patch too.

Again, from the last patch we suggest recreating your old map-editor maps from scratch. Previously placed roads, rivers and forests may be wonky.

If your old map doesn't load, please send them to michael@foolish-mortals.net

Patch v1.04

Major:
- Added 'record voice commands' toggle to bottom-right of the main menu
- Added animated loading screen to main menu (to make the long load time more bearable)

Minor:
- Replaced Rank 4 veterancy symbol with proper SSgt rank symbol
- NEW replays now properly record units retreating from battlefield (Ortona, TOTALIZE, Falaise Gap). NOTE: old replays will still have this bug
- Fixed bug with units retreating from battlefield still being reported around by other units (Ortona, TOTALIZE, Falaise Gap)
- Fixed red 2.4 text floating around after Ortona mission
- Added missing source file for photo

Balance:
- Ortona: removed enemy infantry near Torre Muccia (he kept running away like a coward), replaced one enemy infantry in old town with an infantry battalion

Localization:
- Improved choppy lost location reports
- Improved relative move orders
- Localized unit slots in unit management screen

What's next? Localization improvements, more map editor bug fixes and eventually 'straight-line' move command (I promise!)

Patch v1.05 - map editor love and balancing
Wed, 15 April 2020

This time we fix many of the issues plaguing the map-editor, and give some needed love to our tank crews.

You can help us improve the speech recognition! We've added a toggle to the bottom-right of the main-menu that records your voice commands. We'd be grateful if you help us improve the speech recognition performance on your bizarre accents. Oh, we did other stuff in this patch too.

Map Editor

- Added notifications on uploading, saving and loading of maps
- Fixed clickable layer of objects (units on top, then landmarks, then terrain)
- Removed irrelevant landmark fields from certain landmarks (hid drawing landmark for landmarks where you can't do that)
- Fixed bug with foxholes/fortifications/bunkers being named for speech recognition
- Fixed units being freakishly slow moving uphill
- Retroactively fixed old maps with wonky colliders (i.e. roads, rivers, forests) - they should now work when loaded
- Fixed missing voice-lines when moving to non-objective airfield

Balance

- Increased tank minimum damage by 0.5, increased tank default defence by 5%
- Significantly increased effects of all tank veterancy perks (we want veterancy to feel more impactful)
- Increased effects of other veterancy perks
- Increased snipers minimum damage by 0.2 to make their damage very consistent

Localization

- Fixed certain random events not being localized properly ('we ran into a group of sheep!')

Multiplayer

- Fixed potential bug where backing out didn't properly leave lobby
- Fixed bug creating unnecessary lobbies

Minor

- Unit stats panel automatically closes when mission ends

What's next? Localization improvements to map editor, and eventually 'straight-line' move command (I promise!)

Patch v1.06 - 'Move directly to' command, and map-editor features galor
Fri, 17 April 2020

Patch v1.06

A 'Move directly to' command, and map-editor features galore!

You asked, and we answered: you can now directly order your troops to walk in a straight-line. Fastest path? Pfft. WALK DIRECTLY OVER THAT MOUNTAIN. Useful for when the enemies guard the road, making the most efficient/fastest path too dangerous to take.

Reinforcements have arrived for the map editor! Behold more new features than you can shake stick at!

Major

- Added 'move directly to' command - this makes the unit move in as straight a line as possible (will still path around rivers). Want to walk DIRECTLY over that hill and through that forest? You got it!
Note: 'move directly to' not available for voice commands

Map Editor

- Added 'back to map editor' button that appears when testing a map editor map (clicking it returns you to the map editor and loads the map you were just testing)
- Added INFANTRY BATTALIONS to map editor
- Added NAVAL ARTILLERY unit to map editor
- Added MINEFIELD to map editor
- Added SWAMPS to map editor
- Added BEACHES to map editor
- Added IMPASSABLE areas to map editor
- Units can now be initially 'lost'
- Units can now be initially 'out of communication'
- Added several BRIDGE rotations
- Can now ZOOM the map with scroll-wheel
- When editing terrain shapes, pink vertices appear on top-most layer
- Fixed weird audio bug when switching between map editor and main scene
- Added a billion tooltips
- Fixed localization of editor
- Delete button no longer appears for maps downloaded via steam workshop subscription (you have to unsubscribe via the website)
- Fixed bug where going back and forth between map editor and main menu had unique unit names break

Minor

- Added note about speech models on create new campaign screen (not sure why I removed it way back...)
- Added note about speech models in tutorials and first mission
- Increased font size of stats panel
- Added tooltip about speech models
- Improved localization of a few tooltips
- Fixed speech model setting not saving properly between plays
- Fixed microphone setting not saving properly between plays
- Juno Beach: made Germans retreat less into ocean (Wrong way! Unless you want to surrender...)
- Dieppe revisited: made Germans retreat less into ocean, increased map height to give more room in water
- Fixed artillery mis-reporting actual number of barrages remaining
- Fixed Dieppe Revisited overview not appearing for French localization

Multiplayer

- Minor bug fix to joining

Balance

- Further increased tank resistance to artillery by 10%

What's next? We're going to switch gears and start working on the first free content update. See the roadmap for more details: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011610/discussions/0/2262438048237032350/

Patch v1.07 - bug fixes
Sun, 19 April 2020

Smaller patch today, fixing a few annoying bugs.

Multiplayer

- Units on CLIENT properly sign-in now
- Fixed potential error with client slotting 'any' type unit slot
- Fixed error client-side with move-directly-to order

Balance

- Operation TOTALIZE: Removed enemy infantry company from center forest of map

Minor

- Fixed red ensign in results panel (the other ones were all correct, this one wasn't)

Patch v1.08

Map Editor

- Fixed preventing maps from saving properly on macs
- Made test map button interactable only after map has been properly saved
- Fixed saving, then cancelling repeatedly stopping proper 'save as' menu from appearing

Balance

- Upped snipers veterancy rate (now get veterancy for moving around like scouts, and more veterancy from dealing damage)

Minor

- Fixed rebinding 'sustained barrage' key

What's next? We're working on the first free content update. See the roadmap for more details: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011610/discussions/0/2262438048237032350/

Patch v2.0 - CHALLENGE MODE & voice commands now available for Linux!
Fri, 1 May 2020

Hitler died 75 years ago to this day (April 30, 1945), so it's a fitting time to launch our first major free content update. Whether you're a green recruit or a grizzled veteran, there's never been another time to begin (another) tour of duty!

CHALLENGE MODE

We've added a new challenge mode option to all missions to up the difficulty (not for the faint of heart!). Instead of simply increasing enemy damage by 30% like most games, each scenario has a unique and hand-crafted difficulty added to it. For example, in Leonforte the enemy now has artillery, and the towns have additional fortifications. For the Hitler Line, expect a new fierce armoured counter-attack when you breach their line is breached! Beat all of of the missions in challenge mode to unlock a new steam achievement!

VOICE COMMANDS HAVE COME TO LINUX!

Let us know how it works for you!

SPEECH RECOGNITION IMPROVEMENTS

Your voice is more powerful than ever! Thanks to everyone who donated their voice data, speech recognition performance has been improved for both US and UK speech models all across the board (but most specifically for problem terms "HOW", "JULIETT" and "FIRE BARRAGE AT").

Major

- Hand-crafted CHALLENGE MODE difficulty option for all missions
- Voice commands now available for Linux!
- Speech recognition performance improved thanks to user-donated speech data! (specifically "HOW", "JULIETT" and "FIRE BARRAGE AT")
- Added 'Retry' button to pause menu

Map Editor

- Made it so you can't save maps without entering a filename
- Fixed error saving map editor maps without administrator access

Balance

- Hitler Line: topmost enemy infantry replaced with AT-gun, added foxholes to towns themselves, altered nothern road
- Operation TONGA: added extra tank squadron to enemy counter-attack, made existing enemy tanks head to central town of Robehomme instead of stopping in Varaville, switched all units to dynamic AI for counter-attack
- Made AI tanks less content to garrison objectives (they'd rather attack)
- Minefields are now cleared if they deal a certain amount of damage (the enemy's triggered most of the mines)
- Falaise Gap: added road in south east of map

Minor

- Made AI counter-attacks use more available units (as opposed to only using the minimum required)
- Enlarged map compass text directions
- Removed unnecessary free-play option for tutorials
- Made units retreating out of mission from reaching objective landmark capture landmark before leaving

What's next? The next big free content update is scheduled for the anniversary of the D-Day landings (June 6th). Stay tuned!

If you're having problems with speech recognition, please refer to this thread: https://steamcommunity.com/app/1011610/discussions/0/2262438048225838980

Remembrance Day free soundtrack and sale!
Tue, 10 November 2020

In honour of Remembrance Day, sit back and enjoy some bombastic tunes

Originally called “Armistice Day”, Remembrance Day in Canada commemorates the armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.—on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Canada during times of war, conflict and peace. We remember the more than 2,300,000 Canadians who have served throughout our nation’s history and the more than 118,000 who made the ultimate sacrifice.

To honour this occasion, we are releasing Radio General's soundtrack for free! Sit back, listen to those bombastic melodies, and give a thought or two to all those who fought in the war.

Soundtrack:

Canadian Game Developer Awards
Fri, January 1, 2021

Radio General, along with many other excellent Canadian-made titles have been nominated for the Canadian Game Development awards. You may be surprised at the number of high-quality games coming out of Canada.

We also have an upcoming game listed too. Still a strategy game, but a little bit monstrous. Kaiju Wars: http://www.foolish-mortals.net/kaijuwars
