D.O.W. Steel Beasts Sunday Mission 03/11/19 @ GMT18:00

This scenario is a simulation and does not have any political message.

NAI Cointoss by Gary Owen

Okay Lieutenant,

Your scout platoon, HORSESHOE, is understrength -- your third section is still attached to the brigade chemical S&M (surveillance and monitoring) team.  That leaves you with just four M3 Bradley crews.

We've got a tank regiment organised as a forward detachment barreling down the highway at us.  It's equipped with T-80s and BMP-2s.  The S-2 (battalion intelligence staff officer) expects that it will attack from the march but that its RAG, regimental artillery group, will be deployed in firing positions by the time that their main body hits our FLOT (forward line of troops).

The main body will be preceeded by patrols from the regimental recon company.  These patrols will consist of BRDMs and BRMs (BRMs are depicted in the scenario as BMP-1s without ATGMs).  We expect at least three such patrol teams.  Along the general axis of advance, the regimental recon patrols will be followed by at least one CRP, or combat reconnaissance patrol consisting of a reinforced tank platoon.  The CRP may or may not patrol along the intended route of advance.  An FSE, or forward security element, will be several clicks behind the CRP.  The FSE is expected to be travelling along the route that the main body will be taking for its assault.  It will probably consist of a reinforced tank company.  The main body -- battalion plus strength -- will be following the FSE by five to ten clicks.  A follow-up or rear security company will either be travelling just behind the main body or be deployed with the RAG.

The S-2 expects that the main body will cross the Ulster river at Buttlar and then exercise one of two courses of action: move either northwest toward Eiterfeld or southwest toward Kirchhasel.

The battalion, TF BLACKSMITH, is task organised into three company teams, ANVIL, BATTLEAXE, and CHISEL, and the command and support company.  Based on the S-2's intelligence preparation of the battlefield, the commander has designated two engagement areas, EA HEADS and EA TAILS, one along either of the expected assault routes.  ANVIL is in Battle Position APPLE, overwatching EA HEADS.  CHISEL is in BP CUSTARD, overwatching EA TAILS.  BATTLEAXE is centrally deployed and will occupy either BP BERRY or BP BANNANA, depending on which course of action is taken.

The task force mission is simple:  Destroy the tank regiment.

The commander's intent is that the regimental recon assets be destroyed during the reconnaissance/counter-reconnaissance phase and that the regimental main body be trapped and killed in whichever of the two killsacks that it drives into.

Here's the scheme of the manuever:  The scouts --- THAT MEANS YOU LIEUTENANT--- will screen between the friendly forward line of troops, PL PIE, and the Limit of Advance.  The scouts will also surveil Named Area of Interest COINTOSS.  NAI COINTOSS is the decision point.  At NAI COINTOSS, the FSE will take one of the two courses of action.  If the FSE moves north, BATTLEAXE will occupy  BP BERRY overwatching EA HEADS.  If the FSE goes south, BATTLEAXE will occupy BP BANNANA overwatching EA TAILS.  If the HEADS course of action is taken, once the regimental main body reaches NAI COINTOSS, CHISEL will move to and occupy BP COCONUT.  If the TAILS course of action is taken, once the regimental main body reaches COINTOSS, ANVIL will begin its move to occupy BP APRICOT.

Command and control vehicles are high priority targets.  The regimental command and control element is comprised of a combination of BTRs, MTLBs, and Ural cargo trucks.

HORSESHOE's task is twofold:  Fix and destroy the regimental recon company and CRP and observe NAI COINTOSS, reporting the direction of the FSE and the arrival of the main body.  When those tasks are complete, HORSESHOE will assist in the destruction of the regimental main body.  HORSESHOE may begin anywhere in the deployment zone (area within dashed blue lines).

Course of Action HEADS will be reported using Trigger One (SHIFT + 1)
Course of Action TAILS will be reported using Trigger Two (SHIFT + 2)
The MAIN BODY arriving at NAI COINTOSS will be reported using Trigger Three (SHIFT + 3)

SCORING:  The score is based on accurate use of the triggers, the destruction of the regimental recon company, and preservation of the scout platoon.
