About

AVALON DIGITAL has captured the look, feel, challenge, and excitement of the classic board game War and Peace and brought it to life on your computer. Solo allows you to become Napoleon as you lead your armies from the fields of France to the steppes of Russia, and from the deserts of Egypt to the mountains of Spain. Or you stand against him as Blucher, Kutuzov, the Duke of Wellington, or any of a score of other famous generals as you plan your strategies to turn the tide of the Napoleonic Wars.

Fight on land and at sea in short scenarios that cover every major strategic operation from 1796 to 1815, or do it all in a grand campaign that may – or may not – end on the field of Waterloo.

SCALE
War and Peace is a monthly turn-based, hex-based (40 miles each), strategic game.
Dozens of individually named and rated generals lead armies composed of abstract strength points each representing roughly 5,000 men infantry or cavalry and their intrinsic artillery.

Every major – and minor – power of the Napoleonic Wars is represented with its own set of individual pieces, each of which is depicted by square counters illustrated with a soldier attired in the uniform unique to their nation and type.
The mix of forces includes everything from Spanish partisans and Prussian Landwehr on up to Russian Cossacks and Napoleon's Old Guard, and more.

The game also includes squadrons of ships of the line and transports with which players can wage both a global naval struggle – or recreate the situations that led to the epic clashes at the Nile, Copenhagen, and, of course, Trafalgar.

HISTORY

Although first published in 1980 by the Avalon Hill Company, War and Peace has continued to evolve thanks to a dedicated fan base whose contributions have enhanced the game while retaining the original core set of basic rules. AVALON DIGITAL has taken the most recent of those versions, the 6th Edition which came out in 2021 and faithfully adapted it to the computer. Original designer Mark G. McLaughlin and his more recent co-designer, John Gant, have shepherded the board game through the latest of its six iterations.

The original rules and scenarios remain intact, with additional scenarios set in Italy and the Levant to recreate Napoleon's early campaigns. Anyone who loved the board game will find the system familiar in every way.

John thoroughly revised and enhanced the original grand campaign for the 5th and 6th editions, with Mark's wholehearted approval and gratitude. In order to further ensure that they get every aspect of War and Peace correct, AVALON DIGITAL has retained Mark as one of the lead playtesters and consultants for the computer version of his classic and much-beloved design.

War and Peace by AVALON DIGITAL is more than just a simple port of a board game to the computer; it is also a labor of love by an international team of historians and wargamers for whom this game is THE game on the Napoleonic Wars.

RELEASE OF WAR AND PEACE
Thu, 24 August 2023

The digital version of the famous wargame

THE EMPEROR IS THERE...
After over a year in the works, the game is releasing today. We hope that players will appreciate this product, where we ported faithfully the rules and concept of the great original wargame "War and Peace" by Mark McLaughlin.

The game has a lot of content, many scenarios, with many of them playable in every mode (solo, vs.AI or Multiplayer) while the others and the grand campaign are playable in multiplayer only. Check the product page for more details.

A launch is only the end of a process but not the final step in a development. As those of you who already own the famous Carrier Battles game, you know that the team is dedicated to the product and, with your support and our commitment, this game will continue to evolve positively.

We are confident that you will love the game. And as the talented designer of the original boardgame version said:

" If Napoleon were alive today, he would make the lead programmer a Marshal of France!"

Mark McLaughlin, October 2022.

War & Peace roadmap Based on our current vision.
21 Aug 2023

There are plenty of nice stuff to add.

But first, we should stabilise the game after release and add AI into 4 scenarios with short-duration for free in the main game.

Note on AI

- The extra Spanish scenarios might provide experience for an AI in the Peninsula War or Spanish 1811-1814 campaign. The main issue foreseen in this theatre is the subtile compromise between supply, occupation/guerrilla and mobile forces.

- Final Glory is quite huge and will require a more play experience before working on a AI

- The Grand Campaign's scope it probably to big (map, duration, naval units, specific rules) to design a half-decent AI.

Note on Extra Content

- Foreseen scenarios will cover the Revolutionary era in France and its neighbors between 1792 and 1795, the second partition of Poland in 1792, a larger Italian Campaign 1796-97, Surovov's adventure in Italy in 1799.

- Event cards will change the way major events occurs during the Grand Campaign, giving players more influence on their timing.
Tactical cards will have miscellaneous effects on battle and armies. They are playable in standalone scenarios. Nothing prevent us to make some card specific to a scenario.
See an example in attachment.

- Fog of War. A draft has been presented during the Kickstarter Campaign. It certainly need to mature somehow before entering into design.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/787937257/war-and-peace-the-digital-version/posts/3652989

- There are still plenty of optional rules for the GCG, the main one bringing the war on the world's ocean.

- Battles already offer you a larget set of decision :  go behind fortification or fight on the field, cavalry charge, commit the Guard, manoeuvre on the rear, retreat, advance, join.
Additional battle tactics may be available at the start of each round of battle (probe, frontal assault, envelopment, bombard, etc...) changing die-roll modifiers, casualties, or outcome
We may deliver an alternative combat table.

- What-ifs. Some options may be added to standalone scenario for replayability, unless there are enough stuff to build a new scenario. Ideas might be picked in alternative hairy books such as The Napoleon Options from Johnathan North for instance. Do you know some nice reading ?

- More ideas are likely to emerge, nothing set in stone.
We set most of these as DLC as these items usually require a of work and not necessary for the base game to work.

Update 1.3.5
Wed, January 31, 2024

Regular 2024 update.

GAME NAME CHANGE

Game name changed to Napoleon's Eagles, following a Trademark infringement complaint that was received without warning. Due to this, we are forced not to use Mark’s 40+ years well-known product name 'War & Peace', as his brand was only registered by Avalon Hill and him as a boardgame and not as a computer game.

NEW
New attrition rule as an option.
- Instead of a global die-roll, you may opt for a local die-roll (one die per color and per map area).
- Activate it as a module before starting a new game

Sticky Options:
- when you start a scenario, all previously selected options for the same scenario are selected by default.

FIXES
Miscellaneous fixes

- Removed the lead-time on the rules menu
- Removed cheating possibility on siege die-rolls.
- Better supply check
- Attrition tutorial
- The number of actions on the map button has been removed as too irrelevant
