New Wallpaper -- Capt. Boston
Tue, 16 June 2020

Capt. Boston is an old-school commando. Rangers lead the way, and Captain Boston leads his Rangers from the front. As a Ranger officer, Captain Boston is good at getting out of scrapes, but Anzio is no ordinary battleground.

Forging Ahead
Tue, 7 July 2020

Putting the Parts into Place

Our Burden of Command team has moved to an exciting new phase of internal testing, and we wanted to provide a brief update on our progress.

For a while now we've been developing and testing the Burden of Command tactical engine and artificial intelligence, and the fiction and narrative of the Seventh Infantry Regiment have been growing alongside. Sound effects, music, historical images, and other important features are also coming together. Now it's time to start joining the pieces and integrating the story of the Cottonbalers into the tactical engine.

After testing through several hypothetical scenarios with nameless units, we're now meeting Capt. Lamb, Lt. Wilson, Sgt. Grant, and the others for the first time.

Reading their stories and learning their personalities adds a whole new layer to the decisions you have to make. Knowing what happened recently to one particular platoon, do you really want to order them to assault that fortified position? There's another platoon in range, and its leader has been wanting to get into the action lately.

But as you maneuver the platoons, an unexpected sighting interrupts your plans...

Maybe it's time to radio Capt. Lamb about that artillery support...

We'll have plenty of future updates, so be sure to add Burden of Command to your Steam wishlist and remember to check back often.

3D Sound in Burden of Command
Mon, 10 August 2020

We're working hard to immerse you.

Sound changes dynamically based on location.

We think this unusual in our style of game. Are we right?

Turn on speakers!

Happy V-J Day!

Celebrating Peace, 75 Years Ago Today

Hi Again Everyone!

Sat, 15 August 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the surrender of Imperial Japan, which effectively ended World War II.

As many of you know, we draw great inspiration from our own family experiences in this conflict. In that spirit, we will share a few more of our personal heroes...

Meet Thomas P. Hughes and Agatha Chipley (later Hughes). They are the parents of our Project Lead, Luke Hughes.

Agatha served as a nurse during the war.

Tom served in the Pacific Theater as Lt Commander of the USS Arthur Middleton, then went on to earn a PhD in history and invent an entire field of study, the history of technology. Development of Systems Theory was a key element of his work.

He went on to become a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History in 1990.

You can watch a great lecture he delivered at MIT on his work here

Another team member, Craig Elliott, also remembers his father, Ed Elliott, on V-J Day. After Ed graduated from Kress High School in West Texas in 1944, he joined the Navy and served as a radioman. He served on the USS Pine Island and other seaplane tenders, one of which survived a kamikaze attack. Ed earned two Bronze Stars and served through 1946. This photo shows him shipping out in 1944, and on the back is handwritten "The Kid from Kress."

I would also like to introduce you to my grandfather, Isaac Clevenger.

Isaac served on the minesweeper, USS Token. His was the second ship to enter Tokyo Harbor.

After the war, he became a barber and settled down in Tennessee.
He went on to become one of the best grandfathers ever.

That's all for now.

You can see more about our commitment to honoring history and those who lived it here

We'll be back soon with more game related news and goodies.

I'll see you on the high ground,

Rob

Your future command?
Sat, 29 August 2020

Ready, Willing, and Able

To give you a better look at the men you'll be leading, we put together this depiction of the Cottonbalers (7th Rgt, 3rd Div) "Nickle" Company during World War II. It is fictional but historically structured in a carefully historical campaign, and advised closely by official Cottonbalers historian J. McManus.

Pathfinding - Dumb, and Less Dumber

Our old pathfinding made chickens look smart. You had to do a lot of waypointing to avoid. Now you're less annoyed.

Oh, uh, downside...

Now the AI ain't so dumb either.

More Variety in Artwork!
Tue, 22 September 2020

Those woods look so peaceful ... for now

We did a poll a bit back on our new woods art. Your advice? Add more variety in:

•   shade
•   size
•   shape
•   density

We listened!

And yes it's meant to be 'bucolic'... war will change that. Apologies to those who prefer pixel art. Our vision remains 'painterly.'

Company Level Assault
Sat, 24 October 2020

Your leadership on the right, and on the field:

-- Captain
- Lt Wilson - vet. Too old a vet?
- Lt Thompson - eager. Too eager?
- Lt Stern - an ax to grind...
- Lt Dearborn - Thinks he knows best. Does he?

Good luck Cpt!
