Reality Expansion Pack for X-Plane 11 Cessna 172

Published on Aug 18, 2017

About Reality Expansion Packs

The Reality Expansion Pack for X‑Plane 11 and 10 is an add-on that replaces some internal parts of the sim with custom ones, greatly enhancing the realism.

It replaces and enhances the flight & ground dynamics, the default piston engine, the electrical system, the landing gear and many other aspects of the airplane, adding things such  real world physics, new stereo sounds and extra 3D elements.

REP also provides a damages system, a maintenance hangar and the interactive ground checks.

You learn how o use it and become a better pilot thanks to the in-flight tips: a simple and not invasive way to let you know when you’re doing something wrong to the airplane and how to fix the problem.

"Why should you choose REP?" (from the devs)

"The reasons are pretty straight away:
1.   Leading technology: REP was the first addon of its class for X Plane. We did to X Plane what A2A did to Flight Simulator and P3D.
2.   Beware of imitations: No one else does what we do. The engine physics simulated by REP have no rivals in the X Plane world. Period.
3.   We publish a ton of resources such tutorials and how-tos.
4.   With REP you really learn new things everytime you fly with the sim.
5.   We continuosly add new features into REP: just check our blog to see how many upgrades we made in the last year.
6.   You upgrade your REP package for free every time we release a new version, adding new outstanding features! Even for major changes!"

How does REP change the default X-Plane 11 Cessna 172SP?

The Reality Expansion Pack acts over different aspects of the Cessna 172. Here are some:
•   The flight dynamics are replaced to match the real world data by Cessna. This is the starting point of every REP project. The correct airfoils, together with the plugin, will give the right dynamics to the airplane (right takeoff and landing speeds and attitudes, right stall speed and so on).
•   The onboard systems and the failures are simulated by the 50.000+ lines of code contained in the plugin. Many of the features listed in the paragraph below are related directly to this point.
•   The extra tools such the maintenance hangar, the kneeboard, the weight and balance and the walkaround
•   Many 3D objects are added to complete the original model: the tie-downs, the chocks, the preheater and so on.
•   The sounds effects are greatly enhanced by the plugin providing things such the wind sounds, the unique stereo touch down sounds, the amazing startup sounds etc.

Reality Expansion Pack - Engine Preheating System and Winterization Kit

Published on Feb 9, 2016

REP’s Preheating and Winterization Kit

When operating in cold weather, it’s better to not turn on the engine if it has not been warmed up before. The IO-520 may not even turn on when the temperature is below 3-4 °C (37-39 °F).
If you manage to make it start, you may damage it. The CHT would rise too much is a short period of time. Nevertheless, the oil would be too thick to lubricate the engine.

So, the first thing to do is to go into the hangar window and engage the engine preheater. The preheater is basically an electric heater that blows warm air inside the engine cowl using a flexible pipe fitted (often) into the cowl flaps port.

REP's preheater

Once engaged, the CHT and the oil temperature will slowly raise to an acceptable level for a startup.

It keeps from 30 minutes to an hour to warm up the engine.
You may keep the sim open for the entire warmup period or choose to close X-Plane, watch a movie and then return to your PC. Why? Because the Reality Expansion Pack keeps working under the hood to warm up the engine while your PC is off.
If you don’t like to wait and just want to keep flying, there will be a “Cheat me” button in the hangar that will instantly warmup the engine. 😉

Once the engine is warm, do not switch off the preheater until you finished your walkaround. The engine would otherwise cool down quickly and another warmup run may be required before startup.

After startup, some places are so cold that you are not able to reach the CHT’s green arc. What should you do then?
Just open the hangar window and enable the winterization kit!

The winterization kit is a simple “mask” put in front of the engine cowl. It prevents part of the cold air to be sucked inside the engine compartment. This will keep the engine warm enough during flight.
Here’s a before/after comparison of the winterization kit.
