I watched Dunkirk the movie last night ... alone. The three other ladies in my home aren't exactly the war buff type like I (ahem) am.
My Top 32 Dunkirk Highlights:1. That French sand bag fortification - looks very cosy and secure
2. Sound effects - loud, and at times shockingly jarring, just the way I like it
3. Stukas dive bombing the men with sirens at full blast ... it's enough to drive a man insane
4. Heinkel He 111's bomb run on the minesweeper
5. Heinkel He 111's gunners' shots hitting the Spitfire
6. Claustrophobic conditions below deck, prior to being sent to Davy Jones' locker
7. U-Boat torpedo wake just below the surface
8. The English channel, wavy, choppy, cold and dark
9. Toast and jam, lots of it
10. Tea, lots of it
11. Harry Styles....hold on a second, which one was he? My daughters are fans of him. Me? Not a big fan of OD.
12. The boat cruise in the little ship steered by an old geezer wearing a knitted pullover that Wallace would wear
13. The little ships armada! I am sure in reality there were hundreds of them which could have been achieved
with CGI. Still the N number that C. Nolan showed us was still a sight to behold.
14. Spitfires zooming over the channel ... those Rolls Royce engines!
15. Spitfires zooming through the clouds ... lovely
16. Spitfire pilot's horizontal sun-glasses....were those the fashion back in the 1930s/1940s?
17. Spitfire spitting fire at the Me109s and He111
18. Spitfire being hand-cranked and landing on the beach at dusk
19. Panaromic sweeping camera angles and view of Dunkirk from up there
20. The beach ... it's wide and huge
21. The waves ... don't swim in there, it's cold and dangerous
22. Peter Jackson ... his name was in the credits for special effects
23. Sitting alone in the middle seat, third row from the back, in Hall5 with about 4 other persons.
I blame our Ministry of Education for removing World War II from our history books.
24. No gore (this after seeing Saving Private Ryan and Hacksaw Ridge) ... must have been clean
entry and clean exit wounds every time by the German snipers. How efficient!
25. Bombs on the beach leaving no body parts, dismembered limbs or blood splatter ... keeps the beach nice and tidy
26. Finally seeing German troops in the dying seconds of the movie (is that a German helmet? Yes!)
27. No Adolf Hitler ... I've seen him too many times already on Youtube ranting about graphic cards, Senator
McCain's defeat in the US Presidential Election, Trump being elected President and about Downfall parodies
being removed from Youtube
28. No Winston Churchill ... save him for the other up-coming movie
29. No Ben Affleck in a Spitfire
30. Finding out that Sir Michael Caine had a cameo voice role in the movie
31. Emma Thomas and Christopher Nolan combining well to produce and direct this movie;
32. Finding out now only that Emma Thomas and Emma Thompson are two different persons.
Cheers
