BISim Acquires NaturalMotion Morpheme License to Deliver State-of-the-Art Animations in BISim Products

BISim products will use NaturalMotion's animation system

Bohemia Interactive Simulations (BISim), a global developer of advanced military training and simulation software, has acquired a license to incorporate NaturalMotion’s Morpheme animation middleware in BISim simulation products.

Morpheme is NaturalMotion’s leading character animation system, which provides industry-leading tools for the procedural animation of characters and objects. The middleware is known for making it easier to create highly dynamic, in-game animation for PC, console, mobile and virtual reality platforms. Now in its eighth version, Morpheme has introduced Kinematic Behaviours which bring greater lifelike qualities to characters, allowing them to move realistically with an understanding of their physical properties, without relying on a global physics engine.

“Integrating Morpheme into BISim products will allow trainees’ movements to be far more accurate and realistic. Each movement along the way will seamlessly mesh with the one before, creating a sense of realism within the experience like never before,” said Otakar Nieder, senior director of development at Bohemia Interactive Simulations. “When it came time to choose a new animation middleware for our products, our deep roots in gaming and development led us to choose NaturalMotion’s Morpheme. Their blockbuster-level animation technologies are used in many popular commercial games, and it seemed the perfect fit.”

Morpheme has been used by many of the gaming industry’s most successful developers. The middleware brings games to life by taking existing animation, calculating the motion of the authored chain of joints, and generating high quality, visually believable results. Popular games built with Morpheme include Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto IV and Max Payne 3, and Remedy Games’ Quantum Break.

The integration of Morpheme into the BISim product line is consistent with BISim’s modular approach to software development, leveraging state-of-the-art software components and middleware to enable flexibility, customization and reuse. As part of the licensing agreement, BISim has secured an exclusive support arrangement for Morpheme in the military simulation industry.

BISim will first integrate Morpheme with VBS Blue IG, BISim’s innovative image generation software that provides whole-earth rendering capabilities, and will be able to provide users with a higher level of image generation, affecting primary animations and inertia movements of every object within a simulation, including both characters and vehicles. The integration of Morpheme also allows virtual reality training to be more detailed and easier to provide. For user implementation, this means that when used in a VR-based flight simulator, Morpheme will provide more realistic whole-body motion while operating instruments in the cockpit, increasing the overall immersion.

BISim plans to begin integrating Morpheme into VBS Blue IG in 2018, with additional products, such as VBS3, also benefiting from the middleware solution in the future. VBS Blue IG will be available at the end of 2017 and provided to existing VBS IG customers as part of normal updates.
