Virtual tactical simulation for military purposes is a branch of virtual simulation that has as a platform the use of computerized systems equipped with softwares that reproduce combat situations.

It has as main focus the cognitive development of the instructor, giving him the possibility to develop the mental reactions and attitudes before certain combat scenarios.

It is widely used nowadays, being adopted by several countries of the world and also by the Brazilian Army as a tool to support teaching and military training.

Virtual tactical simulation has many advantages for military instruction:

A) Provides a safe, controlled and low-cost environment in which the enhancement of combat capabilities can be optimized in the live environment;
B) It allows the integration of the various combat functions and the use of a multitude of means that, in a real situation, would be difficult to gather and would generate a high cost;
C) It can be easily followed by a team of specialists who control and evaluate the activities, reproducing the positive and negative results after the instructors through the tools of post-action analysis;
D) Reduce the need to use education fields preserving areas and collaborating with the preservation of the environment;
E) minimizes the need to control and manage damages to existing structures, such as roads and fences;
F) Can simulate in a limited but satisfactory manner the execution of high-risk activities such as breaching breaches, transposition of watercourses, and the effects of enemy fires on the troop and its consequent degradation.

Working with virtual tactical simulation since 2009, the Armored Instruction Center has its own methodology and is extremely consolidated in the conduct of this type of simulation.

Uses Steel Beasts and Virtual Battle Space 3 software for the courses and internships that are developed during the instructional year.

The software is used in teaching, with emphasis on the improvement of capacities such as:

A) command, control and situational awareness;
B) techniques of progression and combat formations;
C) techniques of occupation of shooting position with armor;
D) preparation, planning and implementation of fire support sub-unit level;
E) radio exploration;
F) techniques of action during contact;
G) immediate action techniques;
H) use and occupation of the ground for observation and shooting;
I) identification of armored vehicles;
J) techniques of prevention of fratricide;
(K) movement support work (transposition of obstacles and breach openings);
L) fragmentary orders;
M) offensive operations;
N) defensive operations; and
O) recognition and security; Among many others.

The equipment used for virtual tactical simulation are common computers and peripherals, of civilian use and that resemble, in low level of fidelity, with cuffs and commands of the battle tanks, vehicles and real armaments.

This is due to the fact that tactical virtual simulators are appropriate for the development of activities for leaders of subunits and small fractions as platoons and sections, whose characteristics are: focus on the cognitive domain and not on the psychomotor of the instructor, thus removing the compulsory learning of Specific operational skills of MEMs; Significant number of participants, generating around 40 to 120 entities in a virtual scenario; And, as a consequence of this latter characteristic, the need for a low hardware cost.

The fidelity of high level virtual simulators would be impracticable for tactical simulation because it would generate a high expenditure of resources. High-level virtual simulation is therefore useful in training individuals and small garrisons in specific roles such as sniper and tanker commanders, where the development of the psychomotor aspect is highly required.

We can conclude, therefore, that virtual tactical simulation is an excellent teaching tool, in the preparation of commanders of small fractions and in collective training.

However, it is a piece in the process and must be supplemented, in a standardized manner throughout the Army, by other types of virtual simulation, individual level and trim, by living simulation, by constructive simulation and especially by the indispensable exercises on the ground.

The Virtual Tactical Simulation with VBS3¹

Before approaching Virtual Battlespace 3 (VBS3) simulation software, it is important that some concepts about the military simulation universe be well understood, such as Military Simulation, Virtual Simulation and Virtual Tactical Simulator.

As presented in the Virtual Simulation Instruction Manual prepared by the Armored Instruction Center (CI Bld), still in the approval phase, Military Simulation is the reproduction of specific aspects of a military activity or the operation of some military employment material , Where a set of equipment, software and infrastructures is used.

Military simulation can be conducted in three ways: live, virtual and constructive. CI Bld employs live and virtual simulation. Virtual simulation, in turn, is the mode in which man operates simulated or computer-generated systems.

In this modality, the use of the simulators imitates the operation of systems of weapons, vehicles, aircraft or even the human being, whose operation requires a high degree of training or that involves risks or high costs.

Its main application is in the development of individual abilities and capacities, as well as the training of garnishes and small fractions, allowing to explore the limits of the operator and the equipment, without risks and with low cost.

In addition to these equipment, which simulate procedures in vehicles, aircraft, etc., there are the Virtual Tactical Simulators (SVT). As the name implies, these simulators are focused on the tactical actions of fractions, and in CI Bld they are quite effective at the Platoon and Subunit levels.

SVT is nothing more than professional software that, installed in commercial computers, enables tactical training at various levels. Among these software is VBS3, developed by the multinational company Bohemia Interactive Simulations, which is also used by the Simulators Section of the Center.

By having the architecture open, VBS3 is practically all customizable and stands out for the ample flexibility to mount the simulation scenarios that can even be changed during the execution of the exercise.

For example, the administrator can enter enemy soldiers and adjust their level of training, experience, leadership, physical characteristics, psychological and health conditions during combat.

Similarly, when a vehicle is added to the scenario, it is possible to configure the behavior of the members of their trim, fuel level, ammunition, insert damage in the rolling trains, chassis, engine and armaments.

It is also possible to change the terrain, to insert obstacles, buildings, minefields, civil population, animals, light sources, sound, indirect fires and many other resources. One of the main features of VBS3 is the first-person training, in which the instructor incorporates into his character in the exercise, taking the eyesight of the character.

In this way it is possible to train the individual, since the administrator can customize it according to reality, adjusting its height, weight, armament, ammunition and equipment, if it proves very interesting for the training of infantry troops.

In 2016, in CI Bld, VBS, in its version 3.4, was used in the Tactical Infantry of Mechanized Infantry and, despite some limitations, proved to be quite effective. For the Internship, a Mechanized Marines Company was created as provided in the documents that regulate its personnel, armament, ammunition and equipment, from the Commander of the Subunit to the soldiers of the Combat Groups.

In addition to the friendly troop, the enemy troop was also created, consisting of a complete Mechanized Infantry Regiment. During the assembly of the virtual scenarios and the execution of the exercises, three important limitations were observed.

In VBS3, there is no VBTPMR 6x6 Guarani, which caused the administrator to improvise the vehicle LAV III 8x8, which has characteristics similar to those of the Brazilian vehicle. In addition, one resource that was below the ideal was the tool of elaboration of calcos and measures of coordination and control (Mdd C2).

The symbols and icons in the program are those standardized by NATO and the tools for drawing lines and editing texts are very limited. Added to these limitations are the characteristics of the Minimapa feature, since the VBTP-MR 6x6 Guarani has the Battle Field Manager (GCB), which, in general, enables the operator to view the established Cd M2 and georeferenced location in Real time, your vehicle and your fraction.

At the time, the Minimapa feature of VBS3 is nothing more than a small map located in the lower left corner of the user's screen, which can simulate the GCB, but in this feature, besides the presentation of the M2 C2 and the location of the friendly troop, It is also shown the real-time location of the enemy troop, which directly interferes with the execution of the exercise, since the instructor can visualize the enemy in advance and perform the necessary tactical actions.

Very rarely, this real-time preview of the enemy would occur in a real combat situation. Despite this, these problems can be minimized, for example by acquiring 3D modeling of VBTP Guarani and upgrading to a newer version of VBS.

Therefore, the choice of the Virtual Tactical Simulation program that was used in the Tactical Infantry of Mechanized Infantry was fundamental, since it was always sought the coherence between the objectives to be achieved, the nature of the performing trooper, the possibilities and limitations of the software and the Computers used.

In this context, it can be concluded that, although it presented some limitations, VBS3.4 met the needs of the Mechanized Infantry troop and could also be successfully used in the instructions and training of armored infantry and mechanized cavalry.

CI Bld is committed to creating the best conditions so that its instructors have the knowledge and competence to make the best use of the current means of military employment.

Uses Steel Beasts and Virtual Battle Space 3 software for the courses and internships that are developed during the instructional year.
So that explains why the eSim Games website says "additional customers in the Americas and Europe". It also explains why we had the recent influx of Argentine gear in the TAM family of vehicles. Maybe we'll get the AS565 Panther and some other stuff next? :P
