360 Virtual tour inside Finnish WW2 submarine
« on: June 10, 2017, 03:08:47 AM »

https://www.thinglink.com/scene/926816643126919171

This submarine is named Vesikko.
As many might know Finnland and Germany did lot things together in WW2. Germany did not only support our country against Soviet Union but as well ordered 4 submarines to be build in Finland that were later bough for our own use. This is one of those. These small little subs were quite efficient in small sea between Finland, Sweden and Estonia that as peace treaty was signed with Soviet Union at the end of ww2... There was term that Finland could not at any way have submarines again.

Though...  Actually we but not what you'd expect. It was still more than able to cause small crisis between Finland and Russia. But more about that later if someone in interested.

Hopefully you enjoy this tour.

More stuff about vesikko.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_submarine_Vesikko
Vesikko is a submarine (the single ship of her class), which was launched on 10 May 1933 at the Crichton-Vulcan dock in Turku. Until 1936 it was named by its manufacturing codename CV 707. Vesikko was ordered by a Dutch engineering company Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw (a German front company) in 1930 as a commercial submarine prototype. Purchased by the Finnish before the war, she saw service in the Winter War and World War II, sinking the Soviet merchant ship Vyborg as her only victory. After the cease-fire with the Allies in 1944, Vesikko was retired. Finland was banned from operating submarines after the war and she was kept in storage until she was turned into a museum ship.

Vesikko was one of five submarines to serve in the Finnish Navy. The other four were the three larger Vetehinen-class boats Vetehinen, Vesihiisi, Iku-Turso and the small Saukko. The word "vesikko" is the Finnish name for the European mink.

and other Finnish submarines.

Finnish submarine Saukko
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_submarine_Saukko

The Vetehinen-class submarine was a Finnish 500 tonne submarine class of three vessels that was designed and built in the 1920s and early 1930s. The Vetehinen class served in the Finnish Navy during World War II. The class was designed by Dutch dummy company Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw den Haag (I.v.S) (set up by Germany after World War I in order to maintain and develop German submarine know-how and to circumvent the limitations set by the Treaty of Versailles) and built by the Finnish Crichton-Vulcan shipyard in Turku. The class was based on the German World War I Type UB III and Type UC III submarines and served as prototype for Type VII submarines.

The word vetehinen means a merman. Vetehinen-class submarines were designed as minelaying submarines and were built with mineshafts for 20 mines. Submarines had special inner rails for two torpedo tubes to enable 450 mm (18 in) torpedoes to be used instead of the 533 mm (21 in) torpedoes.

Submarines of the class:

Finnish submarine Vesihiisi

The name vetehinen means "merman".

---------

As bonus.

1917 when Finland was about to have civil war. Russians had some submarines in erm..  "their" land. At that time if I remember correctly Finland was still part of Russia although autonomoys, but we were not happy about it. Hence civil war was about to begin. When german support to us to claim our independence from Russia was beginning and germans boarded to finnish Soil russians sank their vessels in that harbor, including lots of submarines. From where two were afterwards deciced to be salvaged. However repairing batteries, and engine proved to be too costly.

Class and type:   American Holland class
Name:   AG-13
Builder:   Electric Boat Company
Completed:   1916
Fate:   accidentally sunk, but raised
Renamed:   AG-16
Commissioned:   21 July 1917
Fate:   scuttled 3 April 1918

Nice multimedia (audio sounds and view panning)

That bunk looks good enough to sleep in. I'll take the lower bunk if you don't mind.
I like the wooden frames.

Your welcome.

Im ashamed to confess that I didnt either. I only knew we had submarines, but I had no idea that Germans tested their sub designs here and in other countries while preparing to ww2.

And if youre interested of submarines. There is 360 view on the link provided on first post.

I've known about Finland's submarines for a long time, thanks to Erminio Bagnasco's superb book Submarines of World War Two.
