Battle of Donesk by SippyCup

Date: 2018/06/20

-----------
ENEMY:
-----------

Rogue Russian forces headed by Coronel Boris Barkov and Ukrainian separatists have taken over the worker village of Donesk, taking several civilians hostage. Escapees have reported atrocities, as well as the sound of reinforcements arriving overnight. Not much else is known.

--------
OWN:
--------

Assembling downriver, you have four M1A2, four M3A2, and two M966 HMMWV at your disposal. Due to the sensitive mission and heavy civilian presence, only smoke artillery is available.

A Russian commando team has managed to advance undetected into the woods on the West side of the river, near the bridge. They are currently hiding under brush in a cold BTR-80.

----------------
SITUATION:
----------------

Russia’s first female president, Natasha Vashenka, has sent shockwaves throughout the world by ordering an end to all Russian military involvement in Ukraine just three months into her presidency.

Bolstered by growing international condemnation and increasingly aggressive UN sanctions, President Vashenka has signed a decree dissolving all Russian claims to the region, and ordering immediate withdrawal. Several high ranking officers and their loyal troops have responded by refusing to recognize her office, and have made tremendous pushes into the region in the preceding days, taking over several towns and villages. This appears to have been in planning for some time.

With a fractured military, civilians dying, and the world watching, Vashenka has made an unprecedented reach out to NATO on day two, requesting assistance in cleaning up the mess.

MISSION:
-------------

Day 3:

We have been tasked with liberating the worker town of Donesk, effective immediately. Owing its existence to the Turska Power Plant, it serves as home to some 50 people and workplace to over 100.

Early Monday evening, Col Boris Barkov and dozens of troops entered the town, taking as many as 8 people hostage in an office building. Escapees have reported atrocities, as well as the sound of reinforcements arriving overnight, most likely Ukrainian separatists equipped by the previous administration. Much of the following day was a series of brief engagements with Ukrainian scouts. A Russian Commando team managed to sneak into the area via an old logging trail last night, and observe the waterfront. They have confirmed hostages in the office building, as well as personnel in a textile plant down the road. Not much else is known at this time.

Barkov made contact at 0700 this morning. Demanding the immediate resignation or assassination of President Vashenka, he is killing one hostage every hour on a live stream until his demand is met, effective 0900.

EXECUTION:
----------------

0730

Proceed along the main road toward the town of Donesk. Expect heavy resistance as you near the bridge, mostly from T-80s. Secure the bridge and cross as quickly as possible. You may call in smoke to conceal the crossing from enemy view, minimizing the likelihood of creating a blockage.

Your primary mission is the hostage situation in the office building immediately across the street from the power plant. Clear the area, and call in the joint Russian / American Special Forces teams. Timing is everything, as the hostages likely won’t live long after first contact. According to those who know him best however, he will be reluctant to give up his only bargaining chip. Expect a fight.

Special Forces will arrive courtesy of a UH-60 Blackhawk with an ETA of 2 minutes. Troops will drop on the lawn and breach the building. Once the building and the hostages have been secured, extraction will take place on the roof. Cover their operations before heading further into town and clearing it of remaining enemy forces.

On your call, a flight of Russian MI-24 Hinds will patrol the area surrounding the power plant. It is advisable to call them in once most of the tanks have been destroyed so they may focus on the infantry. Their ETA is 2 minutes. Also on your call is a Russian Commando team hiding in a cold BTR-80 in the woods near the bridge. They have eyes on Barkov, and will give updates on his position. Once called, they will advance towards Barkov’s last known location and attempt to secure any intel for UN inspection. Once you are confident they can safely navigate the buildings along the waterfront, make the call. Once their mission has completed, they will leave the area via the bridge. Cover them unless it puts the primary mission at risk.

Do not stray from the hostage situation under any circumstances.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mission ends when hostages have been rescued, Barkov has been killed, and remaining enemy forces have been eliminated.
