SOW Waterloo Multiplayer 03/12/16 @ 21:00GMT


Friendly and relaxed session.




This is a friendly multiplayer mission. The mission will be decided by the players. It will employ the HITS system.

D.O.W. are using the KS mod on many occasions. It is possible that we will use this as our standard mod. I advise you to download and have it installed in-case we use it.

Players: Panzerde, Beef (Le Beof), Asid. Each controlling a division.

We were French. They were the allies(red).

The allies started just outside of the objective town of Altstedten. The town sat atop a steep hill. We did not realise just how steep until we tried to assault the town

The town


Panzerde moved SE. He was to end up NE of the town. I was to approach it from the East. Le Beof was to approach it from the SE. Notice how the enemy fell back and fortified the town while pushing forward cavalry, arty and some infantry.


Le Beof left a brigade of infantry at Karsdorf as he had received intelligence of a possible attack there. I placed my cannons on a hill and let fly. The enemy answered likewise. Panzerde on our right answered the enemy in kind. savagely cutting down enemy cavalry.


Le Beof fought valiantly. However he was up against it. His division was under strength. He started to get the attention of the enemy cannons and he was fighting uphill. His artillery were not really up to the task having recently completing basic training. I pushed hard in the centre when I realised Le Beof was having a hard time on our left. We did not realise the allies had so many cannon. 4 batteries! I was constantly hampered by the enemy cavalry in the centre. I sent word to Panzerde to push harder on our right. He did.


That hill was steep. It was tiring. I was fighting uphill. Constant harassment by enemy cavalry was wearing me down. Hit and run was the order of the day. Panzerde was very effective on our right. Slowly advancing.


Le Beof was getting hit hard on our left. The enemy had concentrated fire from the town towards him as well as artillery. I decided to divert towards him.


We pushed hard. That hill was taking its toll or was it the canister shots from the enemy artillery? We pushed them back more and more. They fought us with everything they had. Le Beof was fighting his own war on our left against the enemy infantry in town. Panzerde formed up to our right and pressed them hard.


The enemy did not want to give up the town. We fought them tooth and nail.


We were to strong. We finally overcame the enemy. They surrendered in town. The enemy on our right were the last to lay down their arms Panzerde fought hard. Le Beof fought very hard and entered the town victorious. All of our troops were exhausted. The enemy had a lot of artillery which they used to great effect. The hill was a major problem. It slowed down our attack and exhausted our men. We did not realise how many enemy there were because of they had quite a few of them in the town or behind the crest of the hill.


This was a great battle!

This is a great, immersive game. Even better playing with friends :)

The feeling of using the HITS system puts you at the heart of the action. Try it.

A very nice AAR of the battle. Thank you Asid for taking the time to write it up and post it. You and Panzerde performed very well indeed! I was mostly ineffective on the left flank. Short on manpower, up-hill, and into the cannon was not fun.

The casualty rate was high for all:

Asid-39% (unlike Panzerde and I, 90% of Asid's casualties came from Infantry),
Panzerde-30% (50/50 mix of Arty/Inf causing the casualties), and
my one Brigade that was in the fight sustained 47.6% casualties (over half inflicted by the enemy's canon).

Panzerde captured/routed a total of 21 enemy units! Asid did very well with 17 units captured or routed. Whereas myself, only 6 units captured.  :-\

Sounds like you had a fun game. Altstedten is a great defensive position. The whole Meckel map is a defender's dream, so many great hills, towns and streams to hold.

Here is a brief aar in 3D images.

The commander looks on. He gives the orders to march. The couriers are dispatched. We will use the roads to save time and leather.








We pass through deserted villages. All is quiet.




The column of men snake into the distance. You can see them at the end of the road.




Le Beof is spotted on my left. I see him in the tree-line .


I approach the village of Gut. It seems quiet. Very picturesque. The quiet will be shattered when thousands of boots pass through.




The church bell rings out. Perhaps in despair.


The town of Altstedten is spotted. We must take it by nightfall. The enemy have other ideas. I see them forming on the crest of the hill. Taunting!


The men are given the order to form up.


My cannons have been placed on a hill. I let loose a volley!


I urge my men forward. Le Beof is fighting a desperate battle on my left. He is getting hammered by the enemy artillery. He is under strength.


Panzerde lets loose a barrage of cannon on my right. He decimates many enemy cavalry. The enemy hesitate. They form up again. They have the advantage. They are charging downhill.


The battle rages on. This hill and enemy artillery are taking its toll. I join my men. Urging them on. Panzerde is moving in on our right to flank the enemy. Le Beof is holding it together on our left..Only just holding on.


Onward men, onward. Panzerde tightens his grip on our right. We are nearing the crest. What waits us?


The enemy charge. I fall back to reform. We can't lose the centre! Panzerde and LeBeof are urged to press harder.


Panzerde and Le Beof come through. I push hard in the centre. I crest the hill. The enemy fall back into the town and to the right of it. They still have plenty of fight. Panzerde pushes harder on the right. The enemy waver. Le Beof moves cautiously forward into the town. Fighting street by street.


We fight on. We engage the enemy from left, front and the right. They gave it their all. The enemy in the town were the first to surrender. They could not take the ferocity of Le Beofs charge! The rest of the enemy laid down their arms shortly after. Maybe it was our cannon getting in position....We accepted the surrender. That night our wounded were tended and much wine was drunk in honour of our fallen comrades.
