Ignominious end
« on: November 26, 2016, 09:14:01 PM »
Very enjoyable mission in the Bf110 I thought I would share.

I fly full missions on expert realism. This means no map updates, no icons & realistic aircraft management.

Mission time 1730. Scattered clouds & fog.
Attack Russian artillery position.

Take off was a little hairy, I was very heavy with 80% fuel & 12 50kg bombs. I used up nearly the entire runway getting airborn. Once up the low fog made seeing the ground difficult in spots & painted an eerie haze over the landscape in the setting sun.

Once I got over the target area I spotted the artillery by their muzzle flashes in the dwindling light. I lined up on their position & as I began I bombing run a Yak jumped me. Pressing in & staying low (I had the bombs set with a 2 second delay on the fuze so they didnt go off under me) I started dropping the bombs singly as fast as a I could press the pickle. As luck or lack of would have it the bombs fell perfectly spaced between the arty implacements.

The Yak broke off almost immediately because my escort of 109's came to my aide.

Next pass on the arty was with guns. I was able to get 2 of the emplacements in a single pass.

As i finished my 2nd pass on the arty I spotted a single truck fleeing the area. A short burst of the guns ended his road trip.

After I pulled up with the truck burning beneath me a quick scan revealed the 109 that had come to my aide was in trouble. The Yak was getting the better of him. A sharp tug of the stick in conjunction with a 1/2 roll put me on his tail for a long gun burst that sent him spiraling to the ground.

Feeling very pleased with myself I decided I had pushed my luck long enough & it was time to RTB.

About the time I rolled wings level on course back to base I did a quick instrument scan & saw my engines were redline from heat. I throttle back immediatly & boosted the water pump to max to cool the engines but it was to late. They started to cough & smoke. The damage had been done. I had forgotten to boost the pump BEFORE using combat power for the last several mins.

About the time I crossed the front I lost #1 engine.

#2 engine was putting about a 1/4 of its normal power so even with it redlined I was steadily losing altitude & speed. I decided to divert to another closer airport. My shot up flight came along.

About 5k from base my failing 2nd engine gave out as well. I was able to belly land without injuring my gunner or myself. The plane however was another matter.

I really enjoyed this mission even though it was a less than glorious outcome. A small oversight lead to the end of my flight. I wonder how many airmen over the decades have lost their lives to some other small oversight as well?

I really like this sim. You can't be John Wayne & zoom all over the battlefield destroying things as long as your ammo holds up. Well you can on the easy setting but on expert each time my wheels touch down at base I am releaved. This can be very intense at times.

Don't forget to boost the pump next time! You don't own that plane, the taxpayers do.
