IL2 1st patrol
« on: November 19, 2016, 03:36:09 PM »
Well it wasnt really my 1st, it was my 3rd but "3rd Patrol" isnt as catchy a title now is it  8)

1st patrol I discovered the AI gunnery is not to be underestimated. 2nd patrol I learned my own gunnery was rushed & not as accurate as it should be. By the 3rd I was putting it all together.

I spotted a pair of Stukas being escorted by a C202. The 202 turned to engage me. I ignored him & pressed on to the JU87's as they were approaching our factory.

I didnt think to turn on the recorder until after I smoked the 1st Stuka.

2nd Stuka I bore in close before opening up. He disintegrated under a short burst.

The 202 seeing his charges go down broke off the chase & headed back towards base. Unfortunately for him my Yak was faster...

Returning to base with 3 kills & well on my way to becoming a hero of the Soviet Union.

Nice screenshots Stardog. I'm still thinking about buying this sim but I've heard mixed opinions. I will ask you a few questions when we are on TS. On the other hand, I haven't played any WW2 sim since Cliffs of Dover and Il2 Sturmovik. DCS doesn't count before they release Normandy map.

My opinion thus far FWIW is that the flight model & damage model are excellent. The graphics & immersion are very good. The AI though is pretty marginal. When dogfighting an enemy AC they will do some very unorthodox maneuvers. Things no real fighter pilot would do.

Overall I do like it though. I think MP this game would really shine.

If there is a better WWII sim on the market today I would like to know what it is.

Hey sounds good Longknife, as long as you are enjoying it thats what matters.
I think the sim was meant to serve the MP community so that makes sense.

As far as better sims thats very subjective obviously so hard to answer that.  Depends really on what you are looking for in your sim.

As for MP flying I think Cliffs of Dover is now the sim of choice for the old IL-2 crowd, for many reasons.  Some of those reasons are related to some design choices by 777 Studios when it comes to BoS but also a huge part of that is the Fusion mod for Cliffs of Dover makes it a whole new sim and a very very good one with quite a few hardcore persistent servers running.  Not sure how that community is fairing at the moment as I havent looked lately.

If Single player immersive dynamic campaign flying there is no sim that touches Battle of Britain II when it comes to WWII era.  The only sim that even touches its campaign engine is Falcon 4.
The graphics are a bit dated yes but if graphics are top of the list of importance then your likely not looking for the difficulty that comes with Battle of Britain II.
Its the only WWII sim that I think truly gives you the feeling of just being thrilled to actually survive a mission and get home safely let alone actually getting a kill.  And it does it with a dynamic campaign engine that will never give you the same exact campaign experience.  Hard to beat that if single player is your thing.

And for WWI I can't speak highly enough for WOFF, its truly a great sim also with a dynamic campaign and unparalleled immersion.

So really it all comes down to what you are looking for.  It sounds like BoS is working great for you and you are enjoying it!

Just some thoughts from an old guy who has been flying WWII sims since the beginning of time.  :)

I probably better add this as well concerning Battle of Britain II,  it has a very abusive relationship with Window 10 so its life is coming to an end as we all go kicking and screaming into the new age of Windows 10.

IL-2 Cliffs of Dover Team Fusion Mod online dogfighting.
That mod really changed things as it rewrote the netcode to allow 100+ person dedicated servers..

Thanks Stardog! I am installing Cliffs of Dover now. Its only $10 on steam so thought I would give it a shot.

BoBII is out since I run Win10 unfortunately.

Ya its too bad but for now BoB2 is very much in a hate hate relationship with Windows 10 from all reports.

Cliffs is a great sim now for sure and the Fusion Mod comes with some really nice detailed semi dymanic campaigns.

Did they fix level bombing in Cliffs? Haven't played in a long time, but liked the clickable cockpit. Loved skip bombing in the Blenheim.
