The 20 best wargames of all time

Steel Beasts Pro is in there as is Steel Fury: Kharkov 1942

"Steel Beasts Pro Personal Edition
If army approval, blue-chip ballistics, and an uncommonly civilised multiplayer scene are more important to you in a tank game than stunning views, bump-mapped beret badges, and bargain-basement pricing, then this is a sim you need to investigate. Despite the eye-watering price ($115) and the slightly musty visuals, dissatisfied customers are thin on the battleground. Users all seem to be too busy enjoying themselves inside scrupulously simulated treatments of AFVs like the Leopard 2, Challenger 2, Bradley and M1A1. Nine countries currently use SBPPE to train their tankers, the powerful scenario editor, multi-crew capability, and RTS-style map layer enabling coordination and command skills to be tested alongside shell-slinging proficiency."

"Steel Fury: Kharkov 1942
Graviteam didnít make a red rouble out of SF in the West. The 2008 Credit Crunch and a disappearing distributor saw to that. The more you play this gritty Ost Front tank sim, the crueller that seems. Panzer Elite SE has the theatre variety and superior interface, but SF models the claustrophobic brutality of 1940s armoured warfare with more conviction. Whether youíre nosing through birch belts in your Panzer IV, bowling towards trenchlines in your T-34, or navigating smouldering hamlets in your Matilda, the mingled sense of power and vulnerability is exquisite. Is that protuberance on the horizon an AT gun, a hull-down StuG, or merely a stack of timber? Best give it a 76mm prod just in case. Mods add WWII celebrities like the Tiger as well as less glamorous halftracks and tankettes."

Nice to see that Battlefront made it with Battle for Normandy.  ...it wasnt the best they have to offer in that series IMHO but all the same its way cool.     IL2, Falcon 4.0, DCS...  I think its a pretty good list.  I could live with a hard drive full of these games if I cold never buy another.

I read that "eye-watering price ($115)" statement. Not mouth-watering , but eye-watering. LOL! I'm new to SteelBeasts Pro PE and that US price tag cost me a cool fortune in my country's currency. I could have bought a good smartphone for what I dished out from my Mastercard credit card. I have yet to tell my wife about it*, but let me tell you that it is worth every penny (or sen) because of the awesome community here on Dogs Of War, AND the uber-riveting online multiplayer environment. Aw shucks, how many games do you know that have the longevity of SteelBeasts which started in year 2000 and in the year 2015, (and counting!) is still going strong?

Firstly, I'd like to share that when I was a four-day-old SB rookie, I believe that I was led by a Higher Power to click on the Dogs Of War TeamSpeak channel. Up to that point, I had only played the offline sessions and tutorials. The multiplayer realm was the great unknown for me. There was only one user online then. That user, his name was ASAP, Aside or Acid, I think it was but I forget, patiently walked me through the basics of SB, TeamSpeak and MP online play. Thanks comrade! Secondly, the Multiplayer multi-crew action is fantastic!  I've just finished my first DOW Saturday 21+ GMT online session. A mammoth 3-hour session - and how the hours went by! I played as a gunner in a Bradley. I love it and am lovin' every second of it! Even when no enemy hotspot image appears on my gunner's thermal sights, the anticipation of an enemy showing up is indescribable. You can cut the tension with a knife. So SteelBeasts Pro PE is worth the price tag and will pay itself off through many intangible benefits like online friendship and comradery, kindred-spirit, teamwork, hours of fun and lotsa fun!

*BTW, IMHO, someone should design a badge that I can earn once I build up the courage to actually tell my wife about my purchase of SteelBeasts Pro. The wearer of the badge will be able to strut around knowing that he has developed and demonstrated the ultimate act of Manliness and Manly courage - telling his significant other that he spent his hard-earned cash to buy a tank game. Hang on honey, it's MORE than a game. In fact, it's MORE than a simulation - it's a way of LIFE. Through Steel Beasts I am learning to listen to, take and execute orders and to be under the command and beck-and-call of another to achieve an objective.....erm..Oops! Whoa hang on...lemme see...okay, it teachers me teamwork, leadership qualities and through it I get to be a better listener, planner, tactician, strategizer and logistics detailer! I learn to be courageous under fire and to willingly and unselfishly sacrifice myself for another's needs. There, that's better. Phew. Heh.

This reply from Frankie...  I do not know if there could be higher praise or way to tell about how much this game means to some of us despite all downsides most of us know. I do agree with him a lot. All the joy, I experienced from playing this game. for example on this saturday. Is not only since a game alone. It is the small yet growing pack of hounds and mastermind behind the pack that makes the difference.

Also about the list. Cool find. :)  Thought. I do think that this list is not perfect, there are games missing and I do not agree with all the games. But well see. Glad that Steel-beast made it to list as well as steel Fury.

Thank you both of you for the high praise you have given the DOW. It give me great pride in being part of something that means so much to others, a community, and something that allows the simulation to be more than just a game for one person, but for all of us that play, sweat, die, and become victorious.

It is humbling to see the time and effort or should I say fruits of our labors, that a small few of us have created such a awesome community filled with a ever growing diverse group of people. It gives me great pride that my missions, Asid's structure (not to mention everything else he does), the in-depth training of Assassin (not to mention his missions), training from Colebrook, and soon to be others as well, missions from others, and the great support from all those big and small.

From where this all began, it has become so much more, and I am glad I am apart of it.

LMFAO - Frankie, I have such a badge. It's round and fits over on my ring-finger...
