DARPA

What is DARPA?
The DARPA ACTUV program is developing a fundamentally new tool for the Navy’s ASW toolkit. Before we can develop the autonomous software that will run on ACTUV’s computers, we need to understand what approaches and methods are the most effective. We have made arrangements for ACTUV to be integrated into the Sonalysts Combat Simulations Dangerous WatersTM game, and we’re offering this new ACTUV Tactics Simulator here for free public download and this is where you can play an important role!

DARPA Game Overview – “ACTUV Tactics”

Sonalysts, Inc., under contract to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), will be releasing the crowd-sourced computer simulation, "ACTUV Tactics". This freely downloadable PC simulation from DARPA will allow players to operate the ACTUV (Antisubmarine Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel) as it attempts to track an unknown submarine threatening the coast of the United States. By analyzing how the best players use ACTUV to complete their missions, DARPA hopes to gain insight into optimal tactics and capabilities to be implemented in the prototype system.

Tracking a submarine is dangerous and difficult mission for conventional Navy systems. If a robotic vessel could be built to do the job, it might offer more reliable ways to keep track of the subs and free up valuable ships and crews for other vital missions. DARPA has studied the problem and come up with a concept for a vessel that looks like it has the right tools for the job. But what would be the best way to use these new tools? What behaviors should the future ACTUV computers employ in order to follow a submarine? What are the best tactics for ACTUV to acquire and track a submarine while safely navigating, complying with the “Rules of the Road,” and dealing with all of the challenges of operating at sea? That's where the ACTUV Tactics simulation is designed to help.

Using the sonars and other sensors of a simulated ACTUV vessel, the players will try to find and follow a submarine in a series of missions of increasing complexity. At the end of each mission, the players will be requested to send the results of their game play to DARPA to be analyzed to see if they have discovered an optimal strategy. There will also be five variants of the ACTUV available in the game, providing insight into which characteristics are most valuable. High scores for each ACTUV variant will be shown on a public leader board on the DARPA website.

ACTUV Tactics is based on the Sonalysts Combat Simulations - Maritime Simulation Engine, used for many naval training and simulation projects. The engine was used for the "Dangerous Waters" commercial naval combat game, released in 2005.

DW is a superb simulator and one I think will be VERY exciting in a multiplayer environment.
If I remember correctly, it even featured multi crew units? (Or was it only the FFG / Seahawk)?

Based from the Harpoon game
« Reply #2 on: February 28, 2015, 08:31:08 PM »
Harpoon was awesome.  Started off as a tabletop game from GDW in the 80's.  Later on, the game expanded into a PC game.  They stopped working on Harpoon about five years ago.  Dangerous Waters tried to carry on where Harpoon left off.  Harpoon didn't deal with any in-game graphics and focused entirely on map view warfare as an admiral would do.  I've thought about playing Dangerous Waters for some time now.  I miss Harpoon very very much.  Using the American carrier fleets was too easy.  Taking them on was a challenge!

A US Naval Officer named Larry Bond designed the original Harpoon game from GDW. He and Tom Clancy were friends and Bond wrote several novels as well. Here is an interesting article from the USNI News about the genesis of the game.

All could be multi-crew. The only bad part about that is that if one of your crew dropped (lost connection) from the session the whole crew drops!

Just to inform...

Instalation on Windows 10 went well using the wrapper. You might get a crash when trying to change screen resolution, if so, do this...

To avoid crash when changing resolution. Go to game's cfg file and edit ModeID value. 1,2, or 3. 2 is 1024x768. So 3 is the hight´s resolution you can get

Wrapper:

Just drop the unziped .dll file in your Steam Dangerous Waters directory

Happy it works on W10  ;)

Care,

Great ya I didnt hear too many having problems with the install to need a wrapper but i do know they had to use the dll.

I didn´t have any problems when I used it in W7. I could set the resolurion to 1280x with no issue. I didn´t try to launch the game after I Installed it in W10 yesterday without the .dll so don´t really know if it would have worked or not, but trying to change resolution with the .dll did give me crashes to desktop.  Changing the modeID in the DW .cfg file to 3 did fix that.  No mouse issues either and Iam using a nVidia driver.  For now I´ll leave it like that, later on I might try the RA mode but it dose seem to have issues with W10. Will see...

I made a 4 sub knife fight mission last night.  All four subs are of the Seawolf class, it´s a free for all for multiplayer.  If anybody wants to have a try just let your XO give me a ring LOL!

I did download the DARPA app (thanks Asid), but beeing 32bit Iam not sure it will work.

Ahoy maties!
