MDE Scenario #1
« on: June 21, 2016, 10:10:01 AM »
Well for my 1st AAR on this site, I choose the 1st Scenario of Middle East War.
It has been a while since I've played this game, but with the possibility of an upgrade in the wind, time to revisit it.
Introductory screen giving context below.

There are 3 game status screens, this one showing the only options, I'm selecting here are Arab opponent, and fog of war. I recall on another site, that option 3 changes the A.I. opponent a little, but will try that one at a later date.

Pretty much the starting position in the northern sector of the map.

My initial plan is to set up a perimeter defensive line, and strike at any units that too close, too early, before they can build up any serious unit levels. Try to establish a secondary line of defence and dig in. Ideally once the push begins, have a rolling defensive ring, giving retreating units time to at least entrench.
(that's the plan...)

The enemy begins to move.
While the game does not animate unit moves, the report is chilling enough.

are there any units that kept still?

First loss of the war.

The small brigade at Safad, evaporates under Syrian attack.
I strike back clearing out a small number of supply units but stall at Nazareth, taking losses.

This AAR will be brief.
As the game gets more intense, I take less screen shots and focus on survival.
But this screen shot encapsulates, the mid game fights. To the north, my armoured division, successfully defeats repeated movement from a number of Syrian units. Naval support is not required, so the Destroyer headed south toward Gaza.
Ultimately, with a rush of blood, I move the tank northward and see HQ units! , only to have it smashed in city fighting with no loss to the enemy.

Hubris from a tank Brigade.

In the south, the unit near Be'er Sheva is out of supply, and remains frozen in place for the rest of the game. I try to link a unit from Gaza to it, but that also gets locked in place, through enemy movement. For the moment units have dug in at Gaza.
Similarly units south west of Nazareth have created an impasse.
The East is a worry however. I have units in Ramallah and Jerusalem digging in against what looks to be a strong mobile force.

Subsequent Game status not looking good.

Currently graded 'C'.
Will be more than pleased if I can retain this 20! turns from now.

Counterstrike at Gaza against the Egyptian troops.
(not successful)
Similarly a hit back at the recently fallen Jerusalem, without effect.
FALL BACK!

Jordanian troops push hard toward Tel Aviv.

Troops pull out from Gazza, but one division remains frozen through lack of supply.
Note the 's' on the unit panel.
(and just how good is the design of these units!!!)

South of Tel Aviv and the returning Gazza unit, makes a desperate attempt to break the line, knowing that it too will be soon out of supply.

with no luck.

Similarly, the Destroyer off shore fires a salvo at the mechanized infantry to help out the returning infantry, but the die roll is not great.

Yeah, I'm getting desperate!

Tel Aviv FALLS!
BUT
is
RECAPTURED
before the end of the turn.
This was as exciting as a small scenario can get.
This battle could have gone either way, but for this pulse, the Jordanians spent only a small time within the city.

Weirdly, this is where the game, played out.
[size=78%]
While I scrambled to get my remaining units back into the city, the Arab forces, never delivered the 'knockout' blow.
The last 10 turns essentially ran through as stalemate. They never carried out an attack.
Iraq and Lebanese troops were moved into an 'out of supply position' and could not perform an attack.
I tried some attrition attacks by 'over-riding' A.I, and did manage to take out a few of the remaining Israeli forces, but the A.I. never got the hint and finished off the game.

Never the less, the final grading was a loss to me, and despite the final non-attack, the game was a highly enjoyable one.
One scenario down; 24 to go!.

Will post up more when time permits.
Will also be more specific about pulses/ turns.
Thanks for reading.
