Another crosswind landing by Tom N. Now observe carefully boys and girls. Oh, one more thing. Don't try in real life unless you want to wreck a 30 million pound plane. By the way, according to a Ministry of Defence (UK) report to Parliament in 2010, a Tornado flight costs £35,000 per hour. So a three minute video, done for you by Tom N, has already saved you £1,750.

SPILS stands for Spin Prevention and Incidence Limiting System (Tornado aircraft).

Quote
The SPILS system is an integrated part of the Tornado flight control system.  It's purpose in life is to ensure the Pilot cannot lose control of the aircraft during certain flight regimes.  A term often heard when describing fly by wire systems is 'Carefree Handling'.  This generally means that a Pilot can 'drive' the aircraft as they wish but this computer will stop any loss of control due to a request that the airframe cannot perform safely.

In the Tornado's case a computer sits between the aircraft controls and the physical controlling surfaces such as the tailerons, rudder and spoilers.  The computer receives signals from the pilot through the controls and decides whether or not to pass these to the control surfaces as requested by the Pilot.  The computer also receives a vast amount of information from sensors mounted within the airframe and compares these against  what the Pilot is asking for. It then instructs the control surfaces to deliver the best possible performance available for the manoeuvre requested without causing a departure. A departure is generally any loss of controlled flight.

These systems are not foolproof, they will not for example stop the pilot flying the aircraft into the ground.

In this video, Tom N demonstrates landing the Tornado on grass with the SPILS deactivated.

Instructive video.

Correction. King of posting Tornado vidoes on Youtube. These videos were recorded by Tom N. He is mentally drained from flying Tornado and doing the game recording. Hence I am uploading to Youtube for him.

JP-233 attack video by Tom N. Part 1.

-and-

JP-233 attack video by Tom N. Part 2.

Videos by the prolific Tom N, the King of flying the Digital Integration Tornado flight simulator.

Thank you so much Frankie,
for uploading that footage,
but "mentally drained" sounds bad, as if getting brain damage,
if at all exhausted, but main reason for me is to keep a "low profile" in the internet
as in the videos  ;-)

except after having delivered all those packages, then i prefer to accelerate in great height back so to save fuel and still using the afterburner as you can see in the height of 40'000 ft the reheat is quite slowly fuelburning but boosts speed further on (to mach 1.8 and more).

Another thing quite close was the threat by all those IR-missiles, really went short on Flares there and could not find my enemy CAP follower, he turned only because of getting into allied territory and maybe locked on by allied SCUD launchers (Or was he even shot down by allied forces? Who knows)

EDIT: i prefer to land at the edge of a runway because the allied airfield towers do a lousy job when coordinating multiple aircraft landings, those always land centered on the runway , the runway luckily is broad enough so that an oncoming c-130 machine can pass without touching when heeding this tactic.

Making a descent from 30,0000 ft. Engine thrust is set to idle. Doing a FOX TWO landing with engine still idle.

Confessions about a little possible cheating -->
In most missions (IDS-only Tornado missions against fixed, non-runway structures) it is allowed to delete all waypoints in the flight plan thus deleting the targets for that planned mission.

Now when hopping into the plane you can ctrl-q exit the "customized" mission, the debriefing screen should be fairly empty for you couldn't have done much damage to your plane nor to the enemy AND that mission counts as a won one!

As told, that doesn't work fur JP-233 attack since a minimum hit percentage will be expected, the program also expects Tanks, Trains and Trucks to be hit and Airplanes according to the briefing (except for the ADV-free - mission, just get the slow Mi-24 Hind down with 10 missile attempts ^^)

Edit: This cheat helps only to be promoted for finishing those 24 missions
It is NO HELP at all in Campaign-missions and Command-missions,
since there you would wish for extra hardpoints ^^

 --> Promotions were if  i remember correctly F/O at the beginning = Flying Officer;
Flight Lieutenant after 24 missions, wing commander after completed the campaign, group captain after command.

I might have missed a promotion here, hmmm

An IDS free-format mission by Tom where he wrought havoc among allied forces and got rewarded with the victory anthem and the positive mission check-mark. A sad day for his victims! He also gained some dishonorable air-to-ground and air-to-air victories in the mission.

Go figure.
