Updated version of the Command community scenario pack

Miguel Molina has released the updated version of the Command community scenario pack. The new release includes thirteen brand-new scenarios:

Big Fish In The Baltic, 1971: In recent days tensions have soared between Sweden and the Soviet Union and its allies due to an incident where a naval skirmish took place in international waters resulting in the sinking of several ships on both sides. Swedish intelligence now suggests that the East German navy is trying to launch a surprise naval attack on Gotland. The Swedish navy has been effectively blockaded by swarms of missile boats in the Southern Baltic, so the air force alone has to blunt the incoming onslaught.

The Bear And The Dragon, 2023: Relations have broken down between China and Russia, and now a Chinese amphibious task force moves to capture Vladivostok. But they will have to run a gauntlet of Russian submarines and bombers to do so.

Northern Fury #11.1 – Vagar Vengeance, 1994: Strike Fleet Atlantic is now conducting its first major counter-attack. The 1st phase was the softening up of Soviet defences on Iceland which has taken place over the past several days. Now as a preliminary move to the retaking of Iceland, the Faroe Island chain must be secured with a primary focus of the Vagar island airport.  You are the Commander of TG Invincible and supported by the French carrier Clemenceau, surface, subsurface and amphibious forces as well as land based air elements. Your task is to unhinge the Soviet defences, protect reinforcing airborne operations and clear the defenders out of the Faroe Islands, all while protecting civilian infrastructure and preserving your force. The Soviets however, have other ideas.

Breaking Bad, 2015: In a shocking turn of events, the CIA has confirmed that Iran has turned its allegiance towards AQAP and supplying the terrorist group with money, arms and training. The Yemeni Civil War could turn for the worst as Iran attempts to fight a proxy war against the US and gain control of the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Red Sea. The US president, going against the wishes of his civilian advisers, puts his trust into his military advisers and begins to put boots on the ground in Yemen.

The Akusekijima Conflict, 2019: A variety of factors (crop failures caused by global warming, collapse of fish populations due to overfishing, etc.) have resulted in Chinese fishing boats violating Japanese fisheries on an increasing basis.  Japan has protested this behavior but Chinese officials have ignored it.  In addition, Japan's increasingly aggressive rhetoric about the issue has created tensions between the two countries. China has become less and less willing to tolerate even lawful actions by the Japanese when it involves their citizens.

The Seventh Battle, 1992: In this unofficial sequel to Barret Tillman’s famous “Sixth Battle”, a shaky cease fire has been established off the coast of South Africa due to the presence of other countries joining the fight against the Soviet alliance, such as British subs and the French Indian Ocean Squadron, as well as the arrival of the USS Eisenhower CVBG. But the cease fire is now collapsing, and the seventh battle between carrier groups is about to commence.

Ruby Slipper, 2016: North Korea is plunged into civil war, with the Kim regime (covertly supported by China) fighting for its survival against the so-called “Democratic Workers Party” (dissident elements supported by Russia). Russian intelligence suggest that the Kim regime, desperate to hold on to power, is preparing to use its cache of nuclear weapons against both rebel and Russian forces – and the PRC intends to help. Russia mobilizes to prevent this outcome.

Peeling The Onion, 1957: You are Commander, 308th Bombardment Wing, Strategic Air Command equipped with B-47E medium bombers and normally based at Hunter Air Force Base (AFB), outside Savannah, GA. You are also the current OP REFLEX Commander on temporary duty at Sidi Slimane AFB in French Morocco and in the event of war will be responsible to conduct nuclear strikes against the Soviet Union out of the SAC forward bases. Hostilities with the Soviet Union have not commenced but if they do, your mission will be to attack Soviet industrial targets starting in southern Russia on the Black Sea coast. War could be just hours away...

Standoff-21, 2019: With Argentina once again attempting to take the Falklands, the UK resorts to a standoff bombardment in a repeat of the legendary "Black Buck" raids of 1982. The never-was Nimrod MRA4 makes its combat debut in this scenario.

Red Iceland, 1980: After the financial crash of 1979 the people of Iceland protested the presence of NATO forces on their home island as a base, effectively turning it into a nuclear target for the USSR. After violent demonstrations and the Icelandic government resigning, NATO agreed to leave the island on the condition that the island remain a de-militarized zone. The Soviets saw an opportunity in this, and with the help of infiltrators and what was presumed to be Spetsnaz units power was taken via a coup d'état by the Communist Party of Iceland. The Soviets maintain that they have only deployed a token force to the island in May, 1980 to "maintain the integrity of the Icelandic government" but this was clearly in violation to the agreement priory reached. More Soviet convoys are headed to Iceland, some of them even loaded with medium range nuclear ballistic missiles; these must be stopped at any cost.

Northern Fury #10.5 – Sweep Up, 1994: The US 2nd Fleet is now entering the final phase of its first major counter-attack. A ceaseless combination of bomber and carrier borne attacks over the past 60 hours has reduced the defences on Iceland significantly! Now all that is left is the task of sweeping up the last few targets and preparing the ground for the amphibious assault by the Marines tomorrow. If you have learned anything this past week however; nothing is simple.

Caribbean Fury #1 – Hot Tamales, 1994: You are commanding the USS John F. Kennedy CVBG on routine patrol in the Caribbean. Although homeport is Norfolk Virginia, the Battle Group has been operating out of New Orleans Louisiana for most of the past year due to the increased tensions in Central America. The air wing (CVW-7) has just completed 4 days of intense training with the Army up at Fort Hood, and you now heading to Roosevelt Roads Puerto Ricco for some ASW and ASuW work.

Merry Christmas, 1998: This scenario is a fictional engagement between the Australian Commonwealth, US, Malaysian Forces and a fast moving Indonesian coup. The coup has arrayed two prongs you will to blunt, one, an outgoing invasion fleet and two, a bustling Naval Base supporting the invasion of a neighbor island.  They are not mutually exclusive problems, both need to be destroyed.  In addition, various other disconnected issues will need to be dealt with, from minesweeping to area defense.

As always, the community scenario pack is available for download from the Command downloads page: http://www.warfaresims.com/?page_id=1876 . The scenarios are also available individually for download on the Command workshop on Steam.

Command LIVE moves Far East! Spratly Spat announced! - (9/13/2016)

The South China Sea is an area where the economic and geopolitical struggles bubble just covered under the surface. Numerous low-intensity conflicts have erupted over the years, and many countries have tried to extend their territorial claims over key islands and atolls.

In particular, domain over the Spratly Islands have been strongly disputed by China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines and other nations. The large reserves of oil and the huge volume of maritime traffic make this area crucial to the regions balance of power.

China, the strongest player in this delicate game, has recently strengthen her sea power, deploying her first aircraft carrier - the PLAN Liaoning – with the clear intent to achieve definitive military superiority, dissuading her rivals from direct military action.

However this deployment itself has disrupted the balance of power. Could it lead to an escalation that ends with open conflict for regional supremacy?

Command LIVE: Spratly Spat, the third instalment in the ambitious Command LIVE series, will explore this fictional – although perfectly credible - situation!

A full analysis of the situation has been dispatched and it is already available!

Stay tuned! Command Live: Spratly Spat will be released on September, 20th!

Command LIVE Spratly Spat is out!

The dispute over the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea has reached a turning point.

China has never hidden her intent to extend her power in the region, both diplomatically and militarily. And the nearby countries have always tried to do the same, in temporary coalitions or alone. The United States, despite their interest in countering the Chinese’s ambitions, have been involved too much in the Middle East to be able to have a strong presence in these waters.

But now, Beijing has decided to raise the stakes deploying the aircraft carrier Liaoning, switching the balance of power in her favour.

How long this situation could last before it escalates in a larger conflict?

Spratly Spat, the third title in the Command LIVE series, has been released! This scenario is an exploration of what could happen if the regional powers around the Spratly Islands unite and - with limited assistance of the US - challenge the Chinese Navy!

The People’s Republic of China’s primary foreign policy concerns are energy security and trade.  Its industrial might and economic strength continues to multiply requiring significant resources from around the world. The sea lines of communication (SLOC) between China and the Middle East and Africa are the most vital and China has invested heavily in expanding and modernizing its Navy to protect this route denying potential adversaries the ability to influence Chinese policy by cutting these vital lines and rolling back adversaries away from the Chinese mainland.

Recently China has been pursuing a more aggressive policy by challenging its neighbors over the various islands and atolls in the South China Sea. It has shown particular interest in the Spratly Islands and Atolls which while sparse offer a very strategic position to controlling the greater South China Sea.  It started its invasion with significant naval patrols and has grown into massive land reclamation projects transforming many deserted atolls into useful island air bases and ports allowing the PRC to dominate the region and have the potential to project power further south.

China’s neighbors have hardly been sitting idle while this take over has slowly occurred.  Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei all have claims within the Spratly’s and have challenged China on the waters and in international court a number of times. Vietnam lost a vicious naval skirmish in 1988 over South Johnson Reef and the Philippines recently won its challenge to PRC territorial claims although the results were ignored. China believes a post World War 2 map depicting a nine dash line defines its maritime territory almost as far as Indonesia. It now has the military capacity to defend this claim as independently no regional power can challenge them. They are winning the dispute by virtue of being the largest local military power and willing to use it to bully the small nations out of the region.

The United States has been supportive of its regional allies in this dispute but restrained due to massive military commitments in the Middle East, election year politics and relative uncertainly with its China strategy.  It has sent numerous warships including a carrier group on freedom of navigation exercise through the region that while are temporary shows of strength are not sustained which cedes the field to the next greatest power, China. It is an issue that will continue until the United States is able to fully pivot its resources from the Middle East to Asia and one that the regional powers may have to deal with largely on their own.

This scenario is an exploration of what could happen if the regional powers unite and with limited assistance of the US challenge the Chinese Navy.

Could a force similar to NATO’s STANAVFORLANT be a good enough deterrent to give the Dragon pause?

EPISODE 4: DON OF A NEW ERA

Coming Soon

http://www.matrixgames.com/products/648/details/CommandLive:DonofanewEra

Tensions in Eastern Ukraine have been on edge since 2013 when trouble started in the Crimean Peninsula resulting in the Annexation of the region by Russia in March of 2014.  The Ukrainian separatists' ambitiondid not stop there however, and with the support of Russia the area commonly known as the DonBass (Basin of the lower Don River) erupted into civil war through the summer of 2014.  This conflict was backed by Russian Regular Army troops ‘vacationing’ in the region, followed by an intervention by the Russian 76th Guards Air Assault Division and other Russian forces. A cease fire put a temporary halt to the fighting at the end of August 2014 but Russian troop movements and occupation of the DonBass did not end.  Separatists in the Donetsk and Lugansk Oblasts continued to receive material and military support from Russia through 2015 and well into 2016. President Putin of Russia calls the area Novorossiya in reference to a 1900’s era region called ‘New Russia’ which stretches along the Black Sea coast to the borders of Moldova and the disputed area of Transnistria.

Moldova is a struggling democratic republic suffering from split demographics, chronic corruption, and a political landscape torn between hard line Communist who sympathise with Russia, and Liberal Democrats who wish to foster ties with the West, all complicated by a significant Ukrainian population.  The area of Transnistria rests on the east side of the Dniester River bordering the Ukraine. The population of this small area, which is evenly split between ethnic Moldovans, Russians and Ukrainians has ignited into varies succession movements striving either to become independent, join with the Ukraine or re-join Russia. A cease fire was put in place in July 92 but dissent, negotiation and discontent continue today.

Russia is nothing if not opportunistic.  It sees NATO as fragmented and weak, the US embroiled into a bitter election campaign, and the European Union in crisis because of constitutional challenges, and the ongoing Syrian Refugee crisis. Perhaps now is the time to make Novorossiya a reality! What better time than when Americans are busy exercising their democratic freedom – election day 2016.

Road to War!

5 November 2016: Tiraspol, Transnistra region, Moldova. Almost 20,000 people are involved in a violent demonstration against the Moldovan Government in reaction to several deadly clashes with police and army forces during the previous 48 hours.  An estimated 27 people are dead and the city is under martial law.  The EU has declared support for the Moldovan Government but Russia has come out vehemently in support of the Ethnic Russian people of Moldova and Transnistra and condemned the oppressive, corrupt and dictatorial government in Chiinu.

6 November 2016: In response to movement of Russian forces in the Rostov area and the redeployment of some of the forces Russia had stationed in Syria, the US announces that it will deploy the ‘Ready Raptor’ Squadron (95th Fighter Sqn, F-22s) and the newly equipped Lightning II Sqn (34 Fighter Sqn, F-35A) to Bezmer Bulgaria, along with other precautionary moves. Moscow declares this a provocation and increases the rhetoric. NATO vacillates but some forces are grudgingly put on a higher state of readiness.

7 November 2016: A major skirmish in a Refugee camp in Greece has captured the attention of Europe, several hundred are dead including at least 35 aid workers and 3 journalists.  The Greek Government is requesting an emergency meeting of the European Parliament.  Late in the day a series of explosions shake Istanbul and Ankara coupled with a major attack by Syrian based Kurdish rebels which crosses the Turkish border in three places and inflicts significant damage and destruction. The Turkish Army is counter attacking.

8 November 2016 – US Election Day: The world wakes toa video of several hundred naked men, women and children lined up facing a ditch as they are gunned down from behind. RT news breaks the story of the ‘Massacre in Moldova’ which is instantly picked up by every new agency on the planet. Some experts question authenticity but are quickly overruled by a ravenous parade of hard liners demanding justice.

Russia obliges.
